Martha's Art Mart

You'll find lots of cool new artwork

Martha's Art Mart specializes in 20th century art - everything from bold abstracts to groovy retro objects d'art, and realism to impressionism. We actively seek out the unique and unusual, finding items at estate sales, auctions, and second hand sources. We are not collectors - we buy to sell to you at prices much lower than the galleries and antique malls.

During our time in Milwaukee we ran across regional artists' works regularly. Many of these works date from the 50's and 60's and are from artists who attended the Layton School of Art (closed in 1974), one of the top five art schools in the US. We are proud to offer fine paintings and prints from this talented pool of Wisconsin artists.

During the summer of 2009 we moved to So Cal and now are enjoying the warmth and sunshine in the Los Angeles area. Every weekend we are out scouring the estate sales and finding wonderful treasures. Stop by our online shop and browse.

If you are on the hunt for a particular artist, or type of artwork - please feel free to contact me through the shop, or make a comment here on this lens. It would be fun to be your personal shopper!

Helen G. McNicoll Original Watercolor Sailboat and Harbor Scene

New item at Martha's Art Mart on Ruby Lane!

An elegantly simple piece by renowned Canadian artist, Helen G. McNicoll. This wonderful watercolor of a sailboat and smokestack filled harbor scene is deceptive. At first it seems so plain, but then your eyes gravitate to the boat and the water - you notice the glimmering yellow and realize the sun is breaking its way through the smoggy air to bob gently on the water.

Helen G. McNicoll 1879 - 1915

A highly regarded and finely talented artist, Helen McNicoll accomplished a considerable amount in her short lifetime and beyond.

A childhood illness left her deaf, but that disability did not hinder her art studies. She received her training at the Montreal Art Association and at the Slade School of Art in London. Ms. McNicoll lived and painted in England and became close friends with artist Dorothea Sharp.

She traveled to France and was inspired by impressionism, developing her skill with landscapes, figures, and seascapes. She is known for her skill with the play of sunlight on her scenes. You may know her work of the more intimate scenes of women and children in garden settings.

Her accolades include being elected to the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy. She won many awards and prizes during her lifetime of exhibiting. Her works can be found at the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and several other fine arts galleries.

She has had at least two retrospectives since her young death, as well as being written about extensively.

Precious Big Eyed Scruffy Young Boy Oil Painting c1960

Remember all those big eyed kid pictures you saw everywhere in the 60's?

I found this painting at the estate of the owner of Stein Kosciuszko Furniture, a long ago high end furniture store in the Milwaukee area. The house was full of pristine condition mid century furnishings and artwork - it was very much like stepping into the Way Back machine!

It is rare to find original paintings of the big eyed kids - take a look at this one, it is quite different from the mainstream.

Such a cute little big eyed boy! He looks so innocent but I'll bet he's scrappy. It is overall well painted and very expressive with a bit of impasto, giving the image some texture and depth.

This painting is signed illegibly - the first part of the signature looks like Paris. It is possibly from a Paris street artist and dates to the 1960's.

DETAILS

Oil on linen canvas. Wood shadow box type frame painted gold with linen inset.

Measures 17 3/4" x 24 1/2" with frame; painting is 15" x 22".

CONDITION

GOOD - As you can see from the photos, the painting has issues. The four corners have tack holes and there are a couple of scrapes with one that actually goes through the canvas - and a spot where the canvas is stretched out. The frame is really weak and needs repair. But I think a good framer can salvage it for you. It is worth it since it is original to the painting.

Having said all that - this painting is easily repairable. Or, keep it as it is because the scruffy little boy look is actually enhanced by its scruffy condition. :)

Unique Beatlemania Collectible - Pastel Painting by Robert Rabinowitz

Cool item to give a Beatlemania fan!

Closeup of Beatlemania PastelThis piece would certainly round out your Beatlemania collection. An original pastel drawing presumably by Robert Rabinowitz, one of the designers for the Broadway show Beatlemania. To make it even more unusual, it is inscribed by the artist: "To David Wyler - thank you, Beatlemania Yesterday" The signature is a little muddled but I believe it is Robert Rabinowitz.

David Wyler was the company manager, and Robert Rabinowitz (along with Bob Gill and Linda Obst) were responsible for the multimedia content of the show.

The drawing shows a young woman staring dreamily off in the distance - she looks quite solemn. The colorful pastel strokes are applied on top of areas of abstract ink wash. Looking under the mat where the paper has been protected from light, you can see that it used to be jet black - the exposed paper has faded to a dark brown.

DETAILS

Pastel and ink on paper; measures 30" x 20" with the mat; the work is 27" x 18.

CONDITION

FINE - no flaws detected on the work itself. Mat has signs of age and wear & is not professional, but it is key to the piece because of the inscription. Maybe your framer can get creative with it?

Art collectors are sticklers about authenticity
Bottom line, the art needs to be examined firsthand by an expert. The donor owns the burden of proving the romantic story. Fake Picassos are a major industry, and have been for a long time. Perhaps the sketches are really prints, or photocopied.
