Originating in the Far East before the earliest recorded history, the Martial Arts evolved into a many different fighting and self defense styles that spread across the globe and are practiced today by millions of people of all ages and cultures. Combining mental discipline with physical exercise, practicing Martial Arts can increase one's balance, strength, flexibility, confidence and self-esteem. The mental and spiritual aspects can improve concentration and focus, relieve stress, and helps some to find the 'Inner Balance' that leads to a more peaceful and fulfilling life style.
There are hundreds of different Martial Arts disciplines, though many styles share the basic core similarities of combining speed, agility and strength with the ability to yield and bend (without breaking). Referred to as Yin and Yang, these opposing forces are balanced to achieve levels of inner strength with outward power and grace. Depending on the school and practiced discipline, Martial Arts classes focus on stretching and balance exercises, improving speed and muscle coordination, strength and stamina. Most Martial Arts used colored belts to signify rank, beginning with a White Belt and as skill levels increase, moving up through different colored ranks to different degrees of Black Belt.
