Martial Arts Techniques To Generate Destructive Power: How To Punch.

Ranked #5,242 in Sports & Recreation, #131,663 overall

The Fist That Conquers The Heavens

Punching is probably the first instinct taking over whenever we fight. Unless you're a Tae Kwon Do-bred fighter, your hands are the quickest weapon you'll want to throw at someone's face. Punches don't require as much amount of balance as kicks to be executed, that's another valid reason why we prefer them as opposed to our legs as primary defense mechanism.

A good punch can end a quarrel in a snap. If you want to feel safe you need to be comfortable with your fists. That means that you must understand the technique behind punching and improve your punching speed and strength to reach your full potential.

There's no need to bring your training to Bruce Lee's fanaticism. Instead, work on your attributes until you feel that your punches travel faster than the eyes of your opponents can detect.

Each one of us has limits. But we can surpass them, even by far. Your goal should always be to get as close as possible to yours and then try to push the line a bit further. That is because your limitations can be the decisive factor between success and loss.

This law is true in martial arts as in any other field of life. Always try to better yourself because there is always someone above you.

In this lens I gathered some interesting material on some of the most powerful punching techniques borrowed from 6 different martial arts.

Hopefully, as you implement these lessons in your training you will learn how to land devastating knock-out punches at will and feel proud enough to kiss your knuckles anytime someone picks a fight with you.

How To Make A Fist

How to make a fistBefore we get into the mechanics of punching, we need to tackle how to actually make a steady fist that won't damage our fingers or wrist. You should condition your fists with constant punching sessions on the Heavy Bag or Speed Bag. The more solid your fist, the harder your opponents will feel it. The fist is actually the last extremity of your body to contribute in a punch but if weak, it can destroy the whole form and momentum of your attack.

For the ones of us who are not professional fighters I don't recommend smacking a punching bag until you bleed. Chances are that if you work at the computer all day or are a musician or so, you should take good care of your hands, am I right? So, what I suggest to you guys is Shadow Boxing. That is, throw punches in the air, simulate like you were sparring with an invisible partner. You won't get the real feel of what it means to spar or how badly it hurts to pull out a 30 secs Heavy Bag punching session, but it will surely get you in the correct "mind set" for punching and fighting.

The more at ease you are when shadow boxing, the less clueless you'll be when the s**t hits the fan. Visualization: that's what shadow boxing is all about. Getting ready in your head before you are in your body. At, least that's how I see it.

So, how do you make a fist? Right below you can see a video that explains it in details. Me, when I make a fist I normally have my thumb touching both my index and middle finger's phalanxes. My ring finger and pinkie are slightly bent. Others prefer to have their knuckles aligned but I find it uncomfortable. I believe that you should make your fist as comfortable as you can but never expose your thumb, you could damage it pretty badly at impact.

NOTE: This video is in Japanese, but it's not that hard to interpret the principle this man is explaining. Extrapolate my friend, English is not the only language in the world ;)

Punch Style #1: Muay Thai

muay thai boran tony jaaAs they say: if you haven't been living under a rock for the last five centuries you might have heard of Muay Thai. If you haven't (!) click on the link to learn more about Muay Thai. Right below instead, you can see a video that explains the punching technique of this world-famous Thai martial arts famed for its strength and brutality.

Keep in mind though that Muay Thai uses any part of the body to attack and, while punching plays its part in this combat technique, Muay Thai is most known for its vicious use of knees, elbows strikes and kicks.

Punch Style #2: Wing Chun

Yp ManThe Wing Chun punch is one of the strongest and most solid you will ever learn. Mastering the technique of this ancient Chinese art will prove useful to release huge amount of power in a short time span and at short range.

Wing Chun sacrifices muscular mass for speed, its punches are designed to strike in rapid and accurate succession. The punches follow straight lines and are NOT supposed to be "loaded". The result is perforating fists that travel through the opponent's defenses.

Punch Style #3: Western Boxing

muhammed aliThis is the punch most of us are accustomed to. It's one of the most natural to pull, yet complex to master. From Muhammed Alì to Mike Tyson the Western Boxing punch is absolutely one of the major forces to be reckoned with, at least any body would.

Through the centuries, this punch has built some kind of scientific aura for itself whereas it's demonstrated that its perfect execution can lead to coma, unconsciousness or even death. But as I said, it's terribly hard to get the hang of it.

Punch Style #4: Systema

Mikhail RiabkoThis Russian martial art, used by elite Spetsnaz units, is as curious in its execution as devastating in its results. The "heavy" punch of this art is absolutely astounding. Watch to believe.

I noticed that Systema uses gravity and body weight to increase the incisivity of its punches. As you can see, hips and legs don't contribute that much to the punch's strength. The arm is left to fall heavily onto the target. It is certainly an interesting method and theory but I have yet to understand how it can be used effectively during a concitated fighting situation. Given its application and effects, this punch seems to be a weapon to use whenever you want to drop your adversaries at first hit. It looks really painful.

Punch Style #5: Krav Maga Punch

Imi LinchtenfeldDid you know that Israel has the strongest army in the world? Now you do. Krav Maga is the martial art these men train themselves into. Check out the punch taught to some of the most dangerous special forces on Earth.

Krav Maga is getting solid momentum and becoming one of the most popular martial arts as we speak. Its punches are not that different in mechanics from boxing punches. They should come pretty easy for anybody as, like in boxing, the whole body is involved in the punching motion. This is a nice addition to have in your bag of fighting tricks. Watch and learn.

Punch Style #6: Jeet Kune Do Punch

Bruce Lee Jeet Kune DoWhat else can I say about Jeet Kune Do besides that is the martial art developed by the legendary Bruce Lee? It's a direct, no-frills style which philosophy is to incorporate whatever technique useful to make it to the goal: suppressing your opponent.

Jeet Kune Do is a open system, hence a combination of different principles from distant martial arts from all over the world. It's the Babel Tower of martial arts. Unfortunately, Lee died before perfecting the art so nowadays there are various "schools" and "experts" misinterpreting its spirit and applications. Guard yourself if you want to learn JKD. Too many frauds out there.

Its snappy punches are incredibly strong and can easily cause internal damage. Keep this punch as a valuable resource in your arsenal.

Why Learn 6 Different Punching Styles & Why Is Wing Chun's The Most Difficult?

Tao

Now, whenever you talk about martial arts, there's always some smart a*s who'll swear you've got something wrong or that X martial art is stronger than Y. I don't want to get into these petty arguments. But I want to explain why I gave Wing Chun the highest rating in difficulty.

The Wing Chun punch is counter-intuitive despite being scientifically valid. It's not the punching motion itself that's hard to control, rather the concept of aligning your body while punching and generating a huge amount of force from a square, frontal position, in a small fraction of time in close quarter combat.

--------

Why did I showed you 6 different punching styles? Because there's no "better" punch. How effective these strikes will be depend entirely on you, your physical attributes and preferences. My intention is to give you as much knowledge as possible on the various options available to you in order to protect yourself. I'm not a martial arts instructor, and I don't want to teach you martial arts.

Nonetheless, if you really want to have an edge on the majority of trouble-makers out there, you need a wider range of weapons at your disposal. Learn as many different techniques and styles as possible, apply what suits you and reject the rest.

You don't need to become an expert in all martial arts. Be a master of your own body instead, and employ the techniques that best fit your physical abilities.

Fist Of Fury: The Force That Should Drive Your Punch

Fist Of Fury

Fist Of Fury. Any martial arts lover remembers that movie. But is it really fury that should accompany your fist?

I believe it shouldn't. Fury, rage and anger are all blinding states of mind that will bring you more harm than good. When you fight, your fist must be governed by wisdom and intelligence. Angry fighters win only against adversaries who are weaker than them. Smart combatants can always overwhelm stronger and/or faster ones.

Let your brain take control and suffocate any dazzling emotion whenever you fight. Wits beat muscles anytime.

Outstanding lens! As someone who has studied in several of these styles I can appreciate how well written your notes truly are. Systema though was completely new to me. I follow what Bruce Lee said: "Take what works for you and make it your own."
