Chinese Martial Arts Clothing

Martial arts are popular the world over. They are enjoyed by many because of the sense of belonging and cameraderie they instil in the martial artist. In Chinese martial arts even the words used to address other practitioners evokes a sense of family. For example the teacher is usually referred to and addressed directly as Sifu or Shifu (depending on dialect), which can mean "master" or "father". Similarly, your fellow students in a school are addressed as older or younger brothers and sisters, according to their level compared to yourself.

Unsurprisingly then, it is common for members of clubs and schools to wear uniforms which reinforce their affiliation with that particular clan. So, to help you promote your club and art, I decided to put together a collection of quality Chinese martial arts clothing - suitable for both training and leisure - featuring calligraphy and designs associated with the Chinese martial arts.

Martial Arts Clothing

Traditional 'Gi' or Modern Uniform

Many martial arts, particularly those of Japanese and Korean origin - insist that their practitioners wear the traditional uniform, or gi for training. In some cases, this is to show respect for the traditions of the art, in some it prepares the mind of the practitioner, saying "this is now training time". In other cases, especially in judo, the gi is a heavier garment, and is grabbed and used for throwing, and for applying certain techniques.

The Chinese martial arts tend to be less precious about wearing traditional uniforms. The old "kung fu suits" with white cuffs and collar are commonly used in competition, especially in the internal arts when demonstrating forms (the Chinese equivalent of a kata).

For general training, the uniform consists of a white (or sometimes black) t-shirt, dark (usually black) tracksuit pants, and appropriate footwear. It is common in external kung fu schools to wear a colored sash to denote level of seniority, but students are sometimes told the sash must be used tight against the trunk of the body to help generate power in techniques. And there's also the explanation that a sash is simply there to hold your pants up!

Promoting Your Style

This quality t-shirt is a pre-shrunk garment made from 100% cotton.

As with most products at the store, available in several colors, and in a wide variety of shirt styles that you can choose directly from the product page.

Customize and Own It

Tailor designs for your own club

Just like in the performing arts, where singers stand out by making the song their own, all these shirts and tops are fully customizable.

Available in many shirt styles

If you see a design you like, click it to go to the product page. In the box on the right, you'll see a link Select a different shirt style. So don't worry if you see a nice design, but it's on a ladies' spaghetti strap top, and you're a guy! Just click the red link, then click on the "Men" tab and you'll be presented with a selection of different men's shirts to choose from. Each style of shirt has its own selection of colors and pricings, but they will all feature the design you wanted.

Customized by YOU

You might think that the designs are too generic, and you're right! You'll know what needs to be included on your shirt, so they are all designed to be customizable. You might like part of a design, but decide to 'ditch' the text and include your own. You might want your club or school name (or even your own name, like many professional sportmen and women have!) Or you might want to include other details, perhaps to show other club members you are an instructor; or have some sort of club system represented on your shirt to denote your grade. It's all up to you.

You can modify your new martial arts clothing however you want. Here's an example of a 'before and after' customization of one of our training shirts.

Bagua Training Shirt Before Bagua Training Shirt Before

  • So the basic shirt had "Eight Diagram Palm Kung Fu" above the trigram logo. If you belong to a club called the "New York City Neijia Baguazhang School" (which of course I just invented as an example!) you can change the text to reflect that.
  • You could add in that perhaps you are an instructor and a 2nd degree black sash. I've done this on the right-front of the customized shirt - which is now a black and white 'three-quarter length sleeve' raglan jersey instead of a t-shirt.
  • If you click to take a look at the modified product page, you'll also see that I have added "New York City Neijia Baguazhang" across the back of the shirt.
