Martin Luther King Unit Study

What kinds of hands-on activities can we do to teach children about Martin Luther King, Jr.? Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that children of all colors would be friends, have equal opportunities and be treated fairly. This article will explore many unique, hands-on activities that you can do with your children that promote friendship, peace and equality.

We will create an interactive bulletin board celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.'s accomplishments and dreams. With a bus and Little People children will get to reenact the story of Rosa Parks on the bus. Learn to read as we sing along with Pete Seeger, If you miss me at the back of the bus. We will make posters that talk of equal rights and reenact a protest march.

Martin Luther King Bulletin Board

Science of the Human Body

Human Body Bulletin Board

For our science lesson we will be looking at the human body. Read to the children about the blood system, respiratory system, etc. Notice that all humans have the same systems. Then pass out four cut out shapes of the human body. At one time, it was thought that people with different colored skin where not the same on the inside. People with darker skin were not treated fairly. Martin Luther King protested against this belief and helped us to learn that all people are the same on the inside no matter what the color of our skin.

1. Have the children dress the first body and add facial features. Notice that we may all dress differently but we are all the same on the inside.

2. Color the skin tone of the second body. Discuss the many hues of skin tones there are in the world. Our skin covers and protects our bodies. We may have different skin tones but we are all the same on the inside. Martin Luther King dreamed that we could see each other as friends without regard to skin color. Does skin color tell you if someone will make a good friend? Discuss what makes a good friend.

3. On the fourth body, add a heart and brains. Discuss how each person has a brain that we use to think and a heart for feeling. Our brain is for learning. We can learn the skills necessary to become whoever we want to be. Our heart is for feelings. Martin Luther King dreamed that we would see that everyone has feelings and deserves to be treated fairly.

4. On the last body, draw and label the organs of the human body. All people have lungs for breathing the same air, a heart that pumps the same kind of blood, a brain for learning... We are all the same on the inside.

These cutouts can be made into a bulletin board, pasted to cardstock and used to make math patterns or stapled together to make books. These could also be used as part of a lapbook.

Martin Luther King and Friendship

Martin Luther King Dreamed that All Children Could be Friends

on WPClipart

Martin Luther King dreamed that all children could become friends, no matter what the color of their skin. How do you make friends? What makes a good friend? How can you include a new child into your classroom or homeschool group? How can you be a good friend?

These are some of the many questions we pose and discuss as Martin Luther King Day approaches. Here are some of our favorite books about friendship.

For our math calendar time we make a number line using paper dolls. We color the paper dolls using various different skin tones and have each one holding hands to show that we can all be friends, no matter what the color of our skin.

Equal Rights on the Bus

Where will the people sit on the bus?

Bring out a Fisher Price Bus and Little People. Make sure that you have Little People of all colors. Children play with the people and decide who will sit where. As you play, talk about ways to make sure that everyone gets a turn at sitting at the front of the bus.

Be sure to use key vocabulary words such as equal rights, fairness, and equality. You might also play Pete Seeger's song, If you miss me at the back of the BusMartin Luther King Day Song from The Complete Carnegie Hall Concert, June 8, 1963 while children are playing.

If you miss me at the back of the Bus is deceptively simple and childlike. The words are mostly high frequency words that are the first words taught to children as they begin to read. The tune is simple and easy to pick up. It is only when we relate the song to Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement that we learn what the song is really about. We teach this song to the children because of its many different levels so that some day they well understand its deeper meaning.

If You Miss me at the Back of the Bus

Civil Rights song by Pete Seeger

If you miss me at the back of the bus,
and you can't find me nowhere.
Come on up to the front of the bus,
I'll be sittin' right there. ...

Pete Seeger wrote this song which became somewhat of an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement.

Another verse has been added which speaks of Martin Luther King:

If you miss me on the picket line,
And you can't find me nowhere,
Come on down to the city jail,
I'll be live right there.

Which refers to the many times Martin Luther King was jailed for protesting.

Write the words to this song on poster paper and sing the song with your children while pointing to the words. Talk about the meaning of the verses and possibly add more verses as you learn about Martin Luther King and what he did to help the Civil Rights Movement.
