All Time Favourite Country Singer
The other day I watched an old Western Movie. While I sang with the theme, I got the notion... I definitely know who sings it, but could not remember... Before the fact that I could not see the name in the credits either drove me crazy, it suddenly came to me: Of course this is Marty Robbins, how could I forget that voice.
His music is everywhere present in the Country Music scene still 25 years after his death, specially in the square dance clubs, and his best songs are covered often. I did not really hear him originally too much in the last years - but I just discovered so many songs on You Tube that brought back all kinds of memories.
I found out, it was Marty's wunderful voice the stories he told in his songs that made me a Country Music addict.
From the saddest of country ballads and spirited songs to Rock'n Roll Marty Robbins mastered all kinds of different styles during the 30 short years of his carreer.
His legendary country songs take the listener to the wild west and capture her/him in a different world, which will never change, even when the handsome stranger takes his Big Iron to space.
Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, The Grateful Dead, Pete Townshend - I sure have forgotten some great musicians and stars - hundreds of singers gave Marty Robbins tribute or covered his songs.
Looking back, I'd almost say Marty Robbins, in an uobtrusive way, made Classic Country Music what it is.
The Marty Robbins Movie 'El Paso'
does not exist :-(
Wonder why Marty Robbins' long detailed Story around the young Cowboy, who fell in love with the Mexican girl Feleena, shot her other courter, fled, but could not live far from her... . Second song of the trilogy around El Paso was Feleena's even longer life story.
It is very rare, that persons from only songs appear so real, one can relate to them specially Feleena, who had been on the search for a good life, including love, and found, that she could have had what she wanted since some time, at the moment her love was shot.
But this lively story was only in songs, not a movie.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Paso_(song) Here on Wikipedia however is one "El Paso"-like Marty Robbins movie mentioned:
"Ballad of a Gunfighter, starring Robbins as the outlaw (also named "Marty Robbins") and Joyce Redd as Secora."
This movie is losely based on another ballad, very much like "El Paso" in tune and content:
San Angelo (listen to the sad story below.) Funny thing is, Marty's song is not in this movie, probably he does not sing in it at all. Still I would have liked to see it very much, like another one I've heard about: Guns of a Stranger in which also his son has an appearance, but I cannot find anything about it yet.
My Wikipedia search for Marty Robbins+Movie brought hundreds of results, but mainly about movie-tunes.
