the fascination of history: awaiting in Boutique Hotel Poejo

Marvão is a must in Portugal, at an elevation of 826 meter (about 2,600 ft.). This landscape imposes itself above the walls of the castle, near mountain riders, valleys and pastures, amongst wild and rocky landscapes, viewing the snow of the Estrela mountain. The ancient burgh grew up along the track which led to the castle. This path, made up of Ruas das Portas da Vila, Praça do Pelourinho, Rua do Espirito Santo and Rua do Castelo is the richest in terms of architectural heritage.
If you prefer car tours, or driving and walking at the same time, it is worth passing through the picturesque places and settlements of Porto da Espada, Olhos de Água, Escusa, Santo António das Areias, Beirã, Cabeçudos so as to pay a visit to the countless vestiges of a distant past:houses with false domes, anthropomorphic tombs and small wine presses digged in the rock, dolmers, menhirs, the Castro da Crença (small castle), ancient bridges, stone-paved roadways and the gutters of Escusa. From the Roman period, emerged the City of Ammaia which is located near São Salvador da Aramenha, englobes excavations and museums open for visitors.
And that ´s not all. Boutique Hotel Poejo **** is the place for you : we are happy to show you other facts in the art of holidaying.

the 3 Museums

tapestryMunicipal Museum of Marvão- Transformed into a Municipal Museum, in 1987, the church´s original religious function can still be recognised in its overall structure and in an 18th-century chapel, its walls covered in figurative azulejo panels and containing an altar in baroque carved woodwork.
Museum and Romam City of Ammaia -A live museum was created, the Monographic Museum of the Ammaia Town, in order to illustrate the quotidian life of the local population that lived here in this Roman occupation period, as well as several objects that were found in the archaeological excavations, with one of the most important Glass collections in the Iberian Peninsula dated from this epoch.
Tapestries Museum Guy Fino- Portalegre tapestries are highly decorative. Every one is based on an original painting produced by a renowned artist. It is the transposition onto another support and at another scale, of that work of art. More than a simple reproduction the tapestry is also an original work of art by itself.

Marvao Castle

A spectacular sight from a spectacular site

The splendid site and 360-degree panorama alone would be reason enough to visit the medieval mountaintop village of Marvão, but the town itself (a candidate for the World Heritage list), is one of Portugal's most spectacular fortified villages.

Typical Marvão street The greatest attraction is the unspoiled medieval atmosphere in its steep and narrow lanes with immaculately whitewashed houses, leading to a magnificent 13th century castle rising from the rock. It contains a huge water cistern and nearby is a 13th century church with a small but interesting museum of archeological finds and local artifacts.

Medieval charm and a Jewish enclave

Castelo de Vide village

There is an atmospheric medieval Judiaria, or Jewish Quarter, where time seems to have stood still, with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses Castelo de Vide's ancient Jewish Quarter (most of them with Gothic doorways and potted plants on the doorsteps). Here is also the oldest synagogue in the country, although all that remains is one modest little room.
In a pretty little square below the Jewish Quarter is a covered Renaissance fountain with a pyramid roof supported by six marble columns, and a central urn carved with figures of boys. The nearby spa allegedly cures a variety of disorders from diabetes to blood pressure problems.

From the Judiaria it's a short climb to the 14th century castle that looks down on the town. Inside the walls is a medieval quarter that preserves an ancient atmosphere.
