Spiderman, the web spining super hero from marvel comics , is the focus of this lens. It will review the series of comic books, movies and games that have come out of this super hero concept
Spiderman : The concept
As a life long fan of Marvel comics, I have always found spiderman to be the most digestible hero from an outstanding bunch of super hero creations from the marvel stable.
Spiderman was always believably human yet super human. His run ins with the newspaper editor was the source of much entertainment to me when reading the comics.
For my, the spiderman Cartoons where watcheable , but a desire to be grown up probably affected my desire to watch them. Thus Spiderman was lost to me , till those spectacular movies came along. The spiderman films, for me, are the apex of super hero movie making. Yet, most of the other marvel comics inspired movies are special in their own right.
Spiderman follows the adventures of Peter Parker, initially a student funding his studies by selling photgraphs to a newspaper in his town.
He gets bitten by a spider with peculiar properties and as a consequence , develops super powers. These powers include the power to weight ratio of a spider, the agility of a spider, he is now able to climb walls by sticking to them, and he has a terrific sense of balance.
In the comics, he develops a mechanical web spinner, for the films , this is changed to a power he gains from the spider. Both versions work just fine for their medium. However, the movie version is my favoured option.

Spiderman : The comic books
The comics create by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby first appeared mid 1962. The appeared as part of the well known "Amazing fantasy" comic book series, also published by Marvel comics. The charater was an instant best seller and was soon appearing in several comic books. I do remember spending a lot of my pocket money Buying spiderman Comic magazines or simply comics as we called them. I also used to buy the Annuals, a once a year hard back muli episode edition. Those where real yummy :)
Spidermans "work" often involved dealing with standard human vilians , he also had a large number of super vilian enemies. Amongst his most memorable foes where the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, the Sandman, the Lizard.
The comics are widely avaialable especially in specialist shops or online . Plus nowadays, you can get an entire series on dvd.

Spiderman : The first Movie
The first spiderman movies stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst as the leads. Young man Working his way through his education as a photographer gets bitten by a radioactive spider which somehow alters his cellular structure conferring special powers onto him.
He Learns how to use his powers, has problems pursuing his relationship with Mary Jane who he has had a crush on for a while. His life with his Guardians and other people including his Lard lord and co workers is rather well developed too.
Simultaneously, The father of his best friend has a difficult period during which he succumbs to a form of madness and leads to him using his resources to develop a super soldier technology transforming him into the Green Goblin.
Spiderman works on battling crime, taking pictures of himself and selling them to his editor, eventually, His Closeness to the Green Goblin Leads Inevitably to their Conflict, and all that proceeds from that. Make no mistake, the combat is Quite brutal , and it is to the death. Spiderman is an adult film.
The movie follows the Comic storyline substantially closely, though there are a few well judged departures from the Comic books such as Biological web throwing rather than a wrist strapped machine, the point at Which Mary jane Comes into Spidermans life is also somewhat different.
This is a magnificent film, In 2002, this was the best movie I watched.

Here, Peter Gets introduced to a scientist he admires who, sponsored by his best friend is going to develop a fusion power reactor. Sadly, there is a disaster, The scientists technology fails him, the fusion reactor is a failure, and the technology turns the scientist into Dr Octopus. Several Battles ensue till Spiderman is victorious.
This film delightfully focusses on the development of Peter Parker as a Young man, his bumbling efforts to develop relationships with his love interest and his best friend inspite of all the things that stand between them. Hard moral questions are asked of all parties during this show, and the film is all the better for it.
With spectacular effects, highly developed characters, a superb plot, this not just a great film, its actually better than its predecessor. Considering how excellent Spiderman 1 was, that is remarkable.

The third Spiderman film retains the same cast and Now develops the tale of Peter Parkers troubled relationship with his Best friend and presents a resolution to Some of his problems with Mary Jane. However, to his Horror, Peters adversaries in this installation of Spiderman, are very close to home. To an extent he is also battling himself.
This film Introduces the Sandman , plus a kind of Goblin replacement and Alternate Spidermen, bad spidermen one might say :) So , there are a lot of super villians flying about. Yet, the script handles it well.
Spiderman 3 , to an extent details the continued development of Peter Parker the Secret super hero, it deals with how he handles or fails to handle his own fame an celebrity. Like its predessesors, this is a well nuanced and detail rich story, well worthy of the franchise. Very good indeed.
