Marmalade Jam With The Peel Appeal Of Oranges

Ranked #3,018 in Food & Cooking, #58,997 overall

marmalade the orange jam with peel in it

Orange marmalade is associated with breakfast time across the world.

Marmalade is so much more than just a jam in my eyes. There's nothing better for me at breakfast than a cup of tea with toast and marmalade. I travel the UK with my job doing office re-fit and refurbishment which means I often stay at B&Bs and small hotels. So I eat Marmalade and toast very often.

Marmalade and toast is an essential accompaniment to any English breakfast. I was brought up on Robertson's Golden Shred. This brand originally used a Golliwog as its brand symbol, and much of the merchandise is now collectible, especially the enamel brooches. The character has not been used by Robertson's since 2002, and the company says that it was a commercial decision and not one based on pressure to be politically correct to stop using the Golly symbol on its products and merchandise.

Robertson's was founded in 1864 and as well as making Golden Shred using oranges it also made a Lemon marmalade called Silver Shred. The recipe for marmalade goes as far back as Roman times, and Quince was the original fruit used in the recipe. The earliest references to the actual word 'marmalade' come from the 15th century in Portugal and France. Marmelo is the Portuguese word for Quince. There are several other great marmalade brands and varieties, and these are all celebrated at the Marmalade Festival which is held every year at Dalemain Mansion and Gardens in Cumbria the UK.

Keiller's Marmalade on Amazon

the originators of modern marmalade

The founder of Keiller's Marmalade was Janet Keiller who lived in Dundee Scotland from 1735 to 1813. She created her jam recipe with the orange peel in it after using salvaged Seville oranges that were very bitter from a Spanish ship wrecked off the Scottish coast. Keiller's marmalade is reckoned to be the first commercially produced marmalade in the world.

Marmalade Myth

mary-queen-of-scots

When I was younger I remember watching the BBC children's programme Blue Peter. when they mentioned that the word marmalade refers to a recipe made by a French chef working for the young Mary Queen of Scots. It is was claimed that she had a bad cold and so the chef made a jelly of oranges and sugar for her and became known as Marie Malade or poorly Mary. There is also a suggestion that it orginated from the phrase Ma'am est malade as well. Whilst a captivating idea there is no evidence that this true.

Yummy lens about orange marmalade. I had not known how to make it and also enjoyed the video about the competition marmalade. We like Keillors thick cut but not always easy to find in the U.S.
