Quotations to Inspire Poetic Living

From the very moment I encountered my first Mary Oliver poem, I knew that I had found an extraordinary kindred spirit. Though I enjoy many poets, Mary Oliver speaks to me in a way that is much different from all the rest. Her insights resonate deep within my soul.

As one who is in the midst of personal renaissance, I am finding true inspiration as I reflect on Mary Oliver's instructions for living.

In sharing quotations that have deep personal meaning, it is my hope that you will also feel inspired to create the life you were always meant to live. If you already have that life, I hope you will share it as a testimony to poetic living.

On Living A Life

Mary Oliver Quotation

"Instructions
for living
a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it."

Nearly every day now I see something exquisite and wonder why I have never noticed it before. That surprise is often accompanied by a sense of wanting and needing to see as much as possible during my time here on the earth.

Mary Oliver often reminds us that paying attention is the key to living the poetic life. Paying close attention, I have learned, is an act of devotion. What could be more transformative than being in love with the beauty all around us?

Nature truly astonishes me on a daily basis. This wonder has led me to write more and more because I do want to share the magic. Perhaps the amazement in me will meet up with the amazement in you. That would be spectacular!

What instructions would you add for living a life?

  • One4Nell Aug 8, 2011 @ 12:17 pm | delete
Take time to enjoy the moment and the beautiful gifts from Nature. Do not let a day pass by without enjoying, feeling and showing gratitude for the simple beauties all around you.

Kindness to Kindness

On Happiness and Kindness

Mary Oliver Quotation

"Watch, now,
how I start
my day
in happiness,
in kindness."

How we begin the morning has a lasting impact on our day and on all who cross our path.

My first act of the day is always extending love to all of the creatures that depend on me. There is great happiness as my four-legged children greet me.

Simple acts, like pouring out fresh sweetness for the hummingbirds (nectar), watering my geraniums, and listening to early morning birdsong, enable me to enter my day gently and with a peaceful heart.

A Gentle Start

What does it look like for you — a day that starts in happiness and kindness?

  • One4Nell Aug 8, 2011 @ 12:20 pm | delete
It's the only way. What a difference it makes when I start my day in joy and gratitude in contrast to getting up and hurrying on to the hectic agenda of the day.

Each day begins with a few moments of love with my canine companion, Tidbit, then outdoors we go into the quiet of the morning, together and thankful for yet another day to work and to play.

Choosing Grace

Mary Oliver Quotation

"You can have
the other words —
chance,
luck,
serendipity.
I'll take
grace."

Out of all the words in the world, why choose grace?

Perhaps we should first define grace. There are many meanings and definitions: unmerited divine assistance; a blessing; an act of kindness, favor, mercy, pardon; the quality of being considerate or thoughtful; a musical note; a pleasing effect; or ease of movement.

I embrace the spiritual dimension of grace. As an imperfect human being, having grace extended to me despite my failures is an immense blessing. Extending grace to others blesses me even more. I have always felt grace is one of the most compassionate gifts one can give or receive.

Just imagine a world in which grace prevailed. Think of how lives would change. I choose grace. How about you?

What word would you choose?

If you were asked to select a word, what word would you choose? This might be a word that defines your values, your aspirations, or a key element of your life. What's your word?

  • JaguarJulie Mar 3, 2012 @ 9:50 am | delete
I would chose grace because it is one word that says so much ... a blessing, an act of kindness, the quality of being considerate or thoughtful ... and much more.
  • One4Nell Aug 8, 2011 @ 12:22 pm | delete
    Gratitude.
  • SheilaDeeth Jul 22, 2011 @ 12:28 pm | delete
    Hope
  • goldenecho Jul 21, 2011 @ 7:53 pm | delete
I think the same as quoted above...Grace is a word to give and a word to accept and a word to hope for!
  • Ruthi Jul 21, 2011 @ 9:26 am | delete
My word choice would be "thanksgiving" for it is the ACT of the feeling of gratitude. What good is a feeling if it isn't acted upon?

What will you do?

Mary Oliver Quotation

"Tell me,
what is it
you plan
to do
with your
one wild
and precious
life?"

This is the ultimate question. What will we do with our precious lives?

I want to live my moments and my days as if every single one of them are precious. I want at least one life to have breathed easier because I have lived. I want to fulfill the purpose for which I was created. I want to extend compassion where it is needed most. I want to be love where I live.

What will I do today with this one wild and precious life? How will I turn these intentions into meaningful actions?

What will you do with your one wild and precious life?

I will slow down and enjoy the moment.

  • Ruthi Jul 21, 2011 @ 9:31 am | delete
Sure, put me on the spot, why don't you! OK, today my actions will speak louder than my words -- I will act upon the feelings and thoughts, beginning with trying once more today to renew contact with my son.

Creative Power

No Regrets

Mary Oliver Quotation

"The most regretful
people on earth
are those who
felt the call
to creative work,
who felt their own
creative power
restive and uprising,
and gave it neither
power nor time."

I do not wish to live or die with regrets. For quite some time, I have heard the voice of my creative spirit calling out for time and power. How long can we deny such a life force without negative consequences?

It can feel very risky to heed the cry of that inner creative soul. After all, an act of creation can expose one to judgment, criticism, or even perceived failure. Is it worth the risk?

I can only speak for myself. I know that I am more willing to risk failure than I am to risk an unlived life or a life of regret. Beginning now, today, I will create to my heart's content.

Creative Power

Are you giving your creative spirit power and time?

  • WordCustard Oct 8, 2011 @ 1:00 pm | delete
I am beginning to. We all have so much potential, but so many of us hold back, afraid of failure. I'm trying to get beyond that fear to simply create.
  • One4Nell Aug 8, 2011 @ 1:35 pm | delete
Yes, I have begun to give time to my creative power every day and I am learning to "let go."
  • genxster Jul 26, 2011 @ 4:01 pm | delete
I'm trying. I struggle with self-doubt. While I take time to create, I tamp down the power of my creative spirit by questioning the worth of my output.
  • SheilaDeeth Jul 22, 2011 @ 12:29 pm | delete
Hmm... Maybe I should get back to writing, but I'm enjoying your lens too much.
  • Ruthi Jul 21, 2011 @ 9:33 am | delete
Again, you remind me to act instead of to think and start and not finish. Definitely plan to heed your reminder and give my creative spirit more power and time today.

So This Is Happiness

The Blessing Right Here

Mary Oliver Quotation

"Sometimes
I need only
to stand
wherever
I am to be
blessed."

Not long ago, as I was walking down my country lane, I stopped right in my tracks and thought: So this is happiness.

For much of my life I have lived in the future. Often, I have imagined experiencing greater contentment when xyz happens. Do you know what I mean — thoughts of how life will be better when you are somewhere else or doing something else? Can you relate?

I am at a point in my life now where I realize the blessing is not out there somewhere. The blessing is in this very place and in this very moment. I want to be a soul who lives with the constant awareness of the immense blessing of being right here, right now.

Your Blessing Right There

What is the blessing right where you are this very moment?

Breathing

Inhaling Life

Mary Oliver Quotation

"Listen,
are you
breathing
just a little,
and calling it
a life?"

What does it mean, for you, to be breathing more than just a little? For me, it means living at a slower pace that allows me to pause frequently to inhale life itself.

A lot of my life has passed by in a blur. There have been way too many years when I was barely breathing. I am so deeply grateful to have finally figured out what I need in order to be breathing more deeply.

Have you discovered that too — how to breathe more than just a little?

On Breathing

What provides the breathing room in your life? When do you breathe most deeply?

  • One4Nell Aug 8, 2011 @ 1:45 pm | delete
Having recently lost my job has given me the opportunity to ponder, reflect and capture the quiet moments and I have found myself breathing, as described in the quotation above, more than I have every done in my entire life....and I find peace within.
  • SheilaDeeth Jul 22, 2011 @ 12:30 pm | delete
    When the writing works
  • Ruthi Jul 21, 2011 @ 9:41 am | delete
Again, you're spot on, so I took a deep breath or two or three to absorb and discovered I breathe the most deeply when I am content with me and what I am "doing" rather than thinking or feeling. I've no doubt today I'll think of you and this lens more than once as I act upon a few things that will bring joy into my spirit and to the spirit of others.
  • Koupie Jun 29, 2011 @ 7:47 am | delete
I am still working on it but I am breathing more deeply than I did in the past, my life too seemed to go by in a blur for a while.

The Real Work

Mary Oliver Quotation

"My work
is loving
the world.
Here the
sunflowers,
there the
hummingbird -
equal seekers
of sweetness."

Mary Oliver discovered her real work — loving the world. Have you discovered what you are meant to do or be?

How do we know for sure that we are doing the work that is our true calling? Do you ever ponder these things? Some of us spend a lifetime searching for our authentic niche, our place in the world.

I'm with Mary Oliver. I wish to make my life's work, in its many forms, an act of love.

Yes! Finally! After having to give up on my dreams to be a surgeon after an accident made it impossible, I had a baby who is now 7 and has autism. In 2 years I will return to school to finish and become a molecular biologist so I can help find more answers about autism but my primary mission is to help the world understand him and other people who share his challenges. It is funny how that worked out so well!
  • genxster Jul 26, 2011 @ 4:05 pm | delete
I feel my mission is to stop looking for a mission and to just relax and enjoy where I am in this moment. Life is a gift to be savored not marched through.
  • SheilaDeeth Jul 22, 2011 @ 12:32 pm | delete
My Mum thinks I have. My family think I haven't. Me, I just want to write (yeah, and maybe be read).
