Pietro Mascagni, an Italian composer
He studied music at the Milan conservatory but left to join a traveling opera company. He became the musical director of La Scala, Milan, in 1929.
His most famous opera was Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) (1890). His earlier and his subsequent works, which included L'amico Fritz (Fritz the Friend) (1891), Iris (1898), Le Maschere (The Masks) (1901), and Nerone (Nero) (1935), were never as popular as Cavalleria rusticana.
Mascagni was, along with Leoncavallo, one of the main proponents of verismo (opera with operas with quasi-historical plots based on sensational, melodramatic and often violent stories from everyday life).
