MASH 4077

Ranked #6,952 in Entertainment, #87,070 overall

Welcome to MASH 4077: Best Care Anywhere

MASH was a great TV series that ran for 11 years between 1972 and 1983 with 251 episodes. I was too young to catch it in its first run, but fell in love with the show through reruns. I consider MASH to be my favourite show of all time. I know it so well that all I need is to catch one line or scene to know which episode is playing

I took over this lens on September 18th, 2011, and started by cleaning it up and updating some of the modules. In 2007, I set off on what I called 'The Great Big MASH Marathon', with the goal being to watch the series in order and write better recaps and notes on each episode. I ended a few episodes into the second season. This lens may encourage me to pick up the marathon where I left off. I will make note here, in the introduction, of any updates to my recaps.

Season One

1. M*A*S*H the Pilot
In which Hawkeye raffles off a nurse

Opinion: Bah.

Date: 1950

Recurring characters mentioned and/or seen: Spearchucker, Ginger, Ho John, Lt. Dish, and General Hammond

References to Canada: 2

Discrepancies with later eps: Hawkeye has parents

Arrests: Trapper and Hawkeye by General Hammond

Miscellaneous notes: Margaret is referred to as Hot Lips, Hawkeye's alma mater is referenced but not named and is apparently near home (since Ho John could attend it while living with Hawkeye's parents)
2. To Market, to Market
In which an antique desk is traded on the black market

Opinion: Worth seeing for the punch line; ie. Henry's reaction at seeing his desk fly.

Recurring characters mentioned and/or seen: Ginger, Spearchucker, General Hammond
3. Requiem for a Lightweight
In which Trapper fights for a nurse

Opinion: Bah.

Recurring characters mentioned and/or seen: Ugly John, General Barker, Margie Cutler

Discrepancies with later eps: Frank's middle initial is given as W., Radar drinks from the still like it's normal for him to do so and he smokes a cigar while watching the boxing match.

Miscellaneous notes: Margaret is referred to as Hot Lips, Henry has a brother who is a prison warden, Mulcahy trained boys in boxing back hme, and Trapper was on a boxing team in college

Memorable quote: MacIntyre to Margaret: "I thought you were Frank's bag!"
4. Chief Surgeon Who?
In which we learn who is the best surgeon at the 4077th

Opinion: Meh. Good for a couple of laughs and character development, but not much of a story.

Recurring characters mentioned and/or seen: Ginger, Spearchucker, Ugly John, General Barker

Discrepancies: Hawkeye says he has a sister, Radar drinks Blake's booze and smokes his cigars

Klinger: makes his first appearance while wearing a nurse's dress uniform, then returns... naked

Miscellaneous notes: Hawkeye mentions his quest for the driest martini imaginable, Frank wrote on the school paper and is from Indiana, by the time Frank had been in practise 3 years he had a 35K house and two cars, Blake has dimples on his butt, Hawkeye was working in a hospital when he was called up, and Klinger already has his reputation of bucking for a section 8
5. The Moose
In which Hawkeye takes offense to slavery in Korea

Opinion: Excellent. Feels like a later show as it focuses more on an ethical dilemma than silly hijinks. It really establishes that Hawk and Trapper are decent men.

Recurring characters: Spearchucker, Ho John, Ugly John

Discrepancies: Radar drinking from the still, Hawkeye has a sister
6. Yankee Doodle Doctor
In which the 4077th shows America what war is really like

Opinion: Superb.

Recurring characters: Margie Cutler, General Clayton

Discrepancies: Hawkeye has parents and Radar isn't shy (in the walking around in your underwear on screen sense)

Miscellanea: Burns did drama in high school and played Romeo in college, Radar has worn glasses since he was 2, and Hawkeye wears his dress uniform.
7. Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts
In which Hawkeye goes nuts for Toyko

Opinion: Silly, worth viewing for the Hannibal Pierce liver scene.

Injuries: Trapper slaps Hawkeye

Arrests: Hawk and Trapper are put under house arrest by Burns.

Quotes: Just watch the whole scene where Hawkeye professes his undying love and attraction for Frank and, for a chaser, listen to Radar make reference to a 'latrine-o-gram.'

Miscellanea: Margaret is referred to as Hot Lips
8. Cowboy
In which there's a hit out on Henry

Opinion: Hysterically funny.

Recurring characters: Ugly John, Ho John, Baker

Quotes: "Jeep. Through my tent." "What did he say?" "Jeep. Tent. Through." (and so on); "Boom."; and "Dear... John."

Miscellanea: Hawkeye says that he's a fanny man and Blake left a practise back home.
9. Henry, Please Come Home
In which Henry does the noble thing

Opinion: Not bad, has its moments.

Recurring characters: Spearchucker, Ginger, General Hammond, Ugly John, and Ho-Jon.

Quotes: Frank, "I didn't come here to be liked." Radar, "You certainly came to the right place."

Arrests: Frank wants to have Trapper and Hawkeye arrested.

Miscellanea: Henry is from Bloomington, Illinois (where he first considered a career in medicine and was later the best diagnostician... so he says); the still is confiscated (by Frank) and Hawk wears his dress uniform
10. I Hate a Mystery
In which Ho-Jon still hasn't left for college.

Opinion: Not a favourite, makes me squirm.

Date: Tuesday, 1951

Recurring characters: Ho-Jon, Spearchucker, General Barker, Ginger

Miscellanea: Margaret is called Hot Lips, Burns became a doctor because it was his mother's wish

Arrests: Margaret wants Pierce court-martialed.

Quotes: "You... GUYS!"; "Who stole my sizzel swick?!"; "I don't have that bizarre a sense of humour!
11. Germ Warfare
In which Frank does not have hepatitis

Opinion: Very funny.

Recurring characters: General Hammond, Ho-Jon, Spearchucker, Dish

Arrests: Franks wants Trapper and Hawkeye arrested; Blake comments that he always wants them arrested.

Quote: (this one's a classic) "I had this weird dream that I was a soda with a big straw sticking in me."

Miscellanea: Burns reminds Blake of his wife (!); Frank has AB negative blood; Hawkeye kisses Burns (!!!); Margaret is called Hot Lips; and like me, Frank rents his beer (*g*).
12. Dear Dad
In which Radar mails home a jeep and Hawkeye flies to the front dressed as Kris Kringle

Date: Christmas (the first of seven or eight Christmaes in a three-year war)

Recurring characters: Ginger

Klinger: appears in uniform, but with a bandana

Injuries: Klinger clocks Burns

Discrepancies: Hawkeye's dad lives in Vermont

Quote: The whole figure A and figure B exchange between MacIntyre and Blake.

Miscellanea: Hawk considers putting on earrings and lipstick to get sent home (!); the Swamp's tent walls are down; Margaret is referred to as Hot Lips; and Hawk kisses Margaret.
13. Edwina
In which we learn that Hawkeye can be a gentleman... if only to end a Lysistrata-style strike

Opinion: Meh. Has its moments, but is awkward.

Recurring characters: Margie Cutler

Quotes: "Please, allow me!" (even Burns is wary of Edwina, so he cuts the ribbon on her present) and "You know, you've got awfully pretty legs, Henry" Burns actually gets a few more zingers in this one, especially the bit where he says he does not approve of what's going on... but better Hawkeye than him. Too funny.

Injuries: Radar has an eye poked with a finger (for peeking into the women's shower) and Hawkeye gets various booboos thanks to Edwina including cut feet and getting hit in the head with a stove pipe.
14. Love Story
In which Margaret and Frank are kept apart

Opinion: Meh. Funny at times, but awkward. Same feelings as for 'Edwina.'

Recurring characters: General Clayton, Margie Cutler

Quotes: "Godless horde?!"; "Ha, Bach!"; "That means my marriage is only worth a dollar seventy-eight?!"; "You guys!"

Discrepancies: Radar already had his nickname when he came to Korea?

Miscellanea: Radar was engaged to a girl named Linda Sue who sent him a dear John recording.
15. Tuttle
In which the 40077th sees the emperor's new clothes

Opinion: A classic! Funny, but profound, too.

Recurring characters: General Clayton

Discrepancies: Radar is still drinking from the still.

Quotes: "Let's make him a druid"; "Druid. Reformed. They're allowed to pray at bushes"; "Colonel Clayton, General Blake here!"

Miscellanea: Hawk had an imaginary childhood friend named Tuttle on whom he blamed all his misdeeds; Radar's imaginary childhood friend was named Shirley and she looked just like him, but with tiny little breasts; Frank always volunteers; we see Sparky (!) and his name is Sergeant Pryor; Radar's first name is Walt; and Margaret is called Hot Lips.
16. The Ringbanger
In which Leslie Nielsen guest stars

Opinion: Meh. Not particularly funny or dramatic.

Miscellanea: Near the beginning, Hawk dips an olive in his martini... then throws the olive away; Radar has a friend at Walter Reed; Blake can't stand the sight of his own blood and he prefers chunky peanut butter; and Margaret is called Hot Lips.
17. Sometimes You Hear the Bullet
In which Hawkeye cries for the first time

Opinion: Painfully superb. It starts off as a very funny episode and then it takes a very ugly turn.

Recurring characters: Ugly John

Memorable guest star: Ron Howard

Injuries: Frank throws out his back... and promptly applies for the purple heart. He says that the last time he threw out his back was on VJ Day in Times Square when he was hugged by a big sailor. Traction apparently helps.

Discrepancies: Frank's full name is given as Franklin D. Burns (probably going for a Roosevelt in-joke until they changed his middle name to Marion for comic flavour?)

Quotes: "Is that the way you want it announced at the awards ceremony; tripped in the mud on the way to the shower?"; It's the first time I've cried since I came to this crummy place. I don't understand it" (etc.); "Look, all I know is what they taught me at command school. There are certain rules about a war and rule number 1 is young men die and rule number 2 is doctors can't change rule number 1."

Miscellanea: Frank was voted most graceful at his school of something I couldn't understand; one of Hawkeye's best friends is Tommy Gillis (who heard the bullet), they've known each other since the fifth grade; Hawkeye was a milk monitor in grammar school during the Depression; and Margaret is called Hot Lips.
18. Dear Dad, Again
In which the 4077th's top-notch new surgeon is an impostor; Hawkeye wanders around the compound and orders lunch stark naked; Radar finishes high school by correspondence; Frank gets drunk on still gin; and the camp holds a charity no talent night.

Opinion: The various bits and pieces are very entertaining, some even hysterically funny. Good 'background noise' episode.

Recurring characters: Ginger

Klinger: shows up first in a wedding gown, then in a lime green dress with a scarf and orange beret

Injuries: Mulcahy's turn to throw out his back. He has had problems with it since Jesuit school because of all that kneeling.

Discrepancies: Hawk has a mom and sis.

Quotes: "If I close my eyes, my brain won't get any air!" (Frank)

Miscellanea: Klinger claims to be a virgin; Hawk says it's a wonder Mulcahy doesn't go deaf (prophetic...); Hawk thinks Radar has ESP; Blake uses his dad's pen; Margaret is called Hot Lips; Frank says his brother used to call him ferret face; and Hawk insinuates that he once took out Radar's appendix.
19. The Long-John Flap
In which the 4077th (hopefully) learns to order winter clothes in June

Opinion: A classic; very funny, if not profound.

Quotes: "Next time, try to stay out of the draft"; "And nothing walks faster than a bacteria! *pause* Bacterium?"; "Those are mine, you hermaphroditic weasel!"

Klinger: Comes in in a lovely emerald green evening gown with heels and a pink bolero. Completely unsuited to the climate, but he looks mighty swell.

Miscellanea: It must be cold out since the Swamp's walls are down; Trapper has children; Radar claims to have very sensitive skin; Hawkeye is extremely honest, he admits to a clueless Radar that he has a winning hand, even if it means losing the longjohns; and Henry loses his appendix.
20. The Army-Navy Game
In which I go "OH! It's the one with the bomb!

Opinion: A classic. Increasingly hysterically funny as the tension mounts. Definitely a favourite.

Klinger: wears a nurse's dress uniform; an orange and blue kilt with an orange twinset coupled with a blue and orange tam-o-shanter (adorable); a grey suit that he claims he was drafted in; and a nurse's dress uniform sans jacket with a green bucket hat.

Quotes: "Don't be silly! I'm too frightened to be scared!"; "Yeah, yeah, don't panic. I'm doing that for everybody"; "But, first, remove the fuse."

Discrepancies: Henry's wife is named Mildred; Radar is smoking a cigar and drinking with Henry

Injuries: Henry gets a cut on his forehead and takes further leave of his senses for a short time.

Miscellanea: Henry caused his school to lose an important football match against Ohio State and to this day, Judge Tank Williams drives by his house once a year and shoots out the porch light.
21. Sticky Wicket
In which Hawkeye makes a mistake, Franks is the bigger man, and Radar gets a faceful of mashed potatoes. Twice.

Opinion: Uncomfortable, but good. A must see because it reveals a lot about Hawkeye, Blake, and Burns.

Recurring characters: Ugly John

Quotes: "You have no height to make fun of!"; "That place is an upholstered cesspool!"; "Are you dedicated to your patient... or your ego?"; "You know something, Henry? You're not really as dumb as I thought you were."

Discrepancies: Blake's wife is still Mildred, but, again, that's an assumption since Mildred is never explicitly his wife...

Miscellanea: Hawkeye has no qualms telling Burns exactly what's wrong with him, but he can't take the same.
22. Major Fred C. Dobbs
In which Frank loses a transfer and Blake loses a tooth

Opinion: This is considered the worst M*A*S*H episode by those involved in producing the show, but I don't understand that. It's not hysterically funny, but it does have its moments and I like how Frank gets his comeuppance for greed. The recital of some of the pranks he's been subjected to is pretty hilarious.

Recurring characters: Ginger

Injuries: Hawk and Trapper put Frank's arm in a cast and Frank clocks himself with it trying to swat a fly

Discrepancies: Hawk says he has a dentist in Detroit which makes absolutely no sense.

Quotes: "You... GUYS!"; "You two should be sentenced to life in front of a firing squad!"; "I think maybe we finally went too far"; "You ever heard of a latrine being robbed?"

Miscellanea: Frank apparently has a habit of taking a post surgery nap; Frank makes a list of pranks he's been subjected to (cots nailed on top of each other; hamburger in his ear being licked out by a dog; hand in water while he was sleeping; cream cheese in his slippers); Margaret is called Hot Lips; Frank has a 30ft yacht and he belongs to a country club; Hawkeye kisses Frank on the mouth!
23. Ceasefire
In which Hawkeye claims to be married with five kids and the camp gets TPed

Opinion: Oddly indifferent. It's neither very funny nor very serious. I really like Blake in this one and it further cements a very important realisation I've had about him. He's a goofy doofus when it comes to army stuff, but he's serious in civilian matters. He also knows when a wisecrack is needed and when it's not. While Hawkeye wrote a disappointing glib in Radar's scrapbook, Henry took the exercise seriously and wrote a profoundly touching message.

Recurring characters: General Clayton, Ho-Jon, Cutler, Ginger

Klinger: wears a salmon pink dress with a white purse and fuzzy blue hat, then returns to sell all his dresses while wearing a burnt orange masculine bathrobe with a pattern reminiscent of candy corn.

Discrepancies: Hawk claims he's from Vermont (where it gets very cold, hence the five children...)

Miscellanea: Blake has a COLOUR picture of a woman and two kids on this desk; Radar is from Iowa
24. Showtime
In which there are three purple singers

Opinion: *blinks* How can so many good elements be put together in such an unappealing manner?

Observation: This episode cements the two M*A*S*H timelines/universes theory for me.

Universe #1 is canon: Blake doesn't make it home to Lorraine and their two kids, Hawkeye is from Maine where his widowed father lives, Radar is an only child, Margaret's father is alive, etc.

Universe #2: Blake possibly makes it home to Mildred and their three kids, Hawkeye is from Vermont where his parents and sister live, Radar has siblings, Margaret's father is dead, etc.

Characters: Ugly John

Discrepancies: Henry's wife is Mildred (confirmed that Mildred=wife). Mildred has a third child, which isn't exactly a discrepancy since Henry and Lorraine only have two...

Quotes: Radar saying that it's too bad Henry couldn't be at the delivery, but at least he was there for the important part.

Miscellaneous: Frank pranks Hawkeye, which is the best part of ep (rigs the still to drench Hawk; rigs a rope to do the bucket with water trick; and rigs the showers so that the shower in the next stall works when the rope is pulled); Hawk gets back at Burns by removing the latrine's walls while Burns is on the can; the dentist (seen in Fred C. Dobbs) just about kills himself trying to not get delayed on his way home; Radar says that he would only deliver a baby with his eyes shut (theory is later proven *g*); Trapper says that he started off in architecture but couldn't handle the math; Radar once again shows off his drumming skills.

Season Two

25. Divided We Stand
In which big brass thinks about breaking up the 4077th

Opinion: Very funny. This idea was repeated at least once more, though.

Recurring characters: Ginger, General Clayton

Klinger: wears his blue and orange kilt & tam o'shanter outfit again then returns in a green evening gown with a flowered bonnet

Quotes: "Get out of here, Radar, or I'll sever every nerve in your butt!"; "Actually, I was thinking of becoming a bum doctor, but the proctology class was full;" "Here you go, Piercentyre;" "Yom Kipper services will be held for all Jewish personnel of the Hebrew faith."

Miscellanea: the cast of characters is recapped at both the beginning and end of the ep; MacIntyre rewrites the commandments in Frank's Bible; Hawk, Trap, and a nurse play strip poker; Hawk puts an appendix in Frank's boot (!); Hawk gives a manicure to the skeleton in Blake's office; the 4077th is 3 miles from the front; and Margaret is called Hot Lips.
26. 5 O'Clock Charlie
In which Frank wants a nug

Opinion: Priceless.

Recurring characters: Ginger, General Clayton

Arrests: Frank says to Hawk and Trapper that he's putting them under arrest.

Quotes: "X minutes to Charlie. X minutes to Charlie!"

Miscellanea: Frank has gunnery training (scary) and was ROTC; Margaret is called Hot Lips
27. Radar's Report
In which Trapper loses a patient, Hawkeye loses a fiancée, Klinger loses a section 8, and Henry loses a golf ball

Opinion: Fun. It's completely mundane, except for the bit with all the stabbing and blood, but comes together well. As Henry says in it "Well, every week can't be exciting." The best part is...

Erika Johnson. Hawk falls hard for her and the ep ends with Hawkeye reflecting that "Well, the boot is finally on the other foot." He seems genuinely serious about marriage, but she isn't.

Date: October 19-22, 1951

Recurring character: Sidney Freedman. They call him Milton here, but I'll just assume that Sidney is his middle name....

Klinger: refuses to sign section 8 papers labeling him a homosexual and transvestite; wears a size 36B bra; wears a red spaghetti strap evening cost (that cost $39) with a tulle scarf under a helmet with a white purse; return in a hair net, pink & white gingham dress, and a red scarf; comes back in the evening gown sans helmet; meets Freedman in a salmon pink dress with a ruffled collar and matching headgear; ends the ep in a red beret, red skirt, and a sleeveless pink and green blouse knotted at the mid-drift; and at the end of the ep, Henry refers to "a tight green satin job" Klinger wore in the mess tent that morning. "It was a hit snapper!"

Quotes: "Ooh! So this is the Swamp!"; "Oh, is it now already?"

Miscellanea: Hawk won't date married women; Radar pretends to give his teddy bear coffee; Hawk did his residency in a big general hospital
28. For the Good of the Outfit
In which the village of Tai-Don is bombed and the US Army learns to take its lumps

Opinion: A classic. It reveals so much about all the characters. The villain in this piece is not the US Army, but Henry.

Date: May 24, 1951 (date of letter from Hawk's dad)

Recurring characters: General Clayton, Ginger

Arrests: Henry puts Hawk under arrest

Quotes: "Frank, one decent act. If you don't like it, you don't have to do it again"; "Pierce, don't start this threatening thing! I'm warning you!"

Miscellanea: There's a surgery schedule; last time Hawk declared truce with Burns, Burns got peanut butter in his stethoscope and ether in his aftershave; Frank never goes against his team; and Clayton's favourite beverage is sherry with ginger ale.

Scatology: crapola made me blink, then they added poop, and manure

Major Charles Emerson Winchester III

Played by David Ogden Stiers

Charles is my favourite M*A*S*H character. He is poignantly human and the character who grows the most in his misadventures in Korea.

Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger

Played by Jamie Farr

This is an AWESOME site! I can't get enough M*A*S*H...ever!! I just finished watching the entire 11 seasons (again) and I've done that countless times. I grew up watching it and it just stuck with me. It's my favorite TV show of all time. I'm like you - I can hear just a line or two and know exactly what episode it is. Thank you for putting all of this together - you did a fantastic job!!

M*A*S*H is an incredible show. The jokes come so fast that it's hard to catch them all. I can watch reruns a million times and never get tired of it. It's also pretty tame in comparison to today's TV standards. I watched it as a kid and wouldn't have any problem letting my kids watch it with me.
