Mashed potato - my comfort food!
Everyone has a comfort food (I think), and mine is the hot mashed potato.
Wonderful when made with butter and milk, it has been my favourite food since a child and now my teeth are thinking about falling out I think it always will be!

The humble potato
Mashed potato is the highest form of the potato
"To the West, the potato is much like the cow to the Hindu religion: revered it is allowed to grow wherever it pleases, sometimes disrupting traffic for seasons at a time. Mashed potato is the highest form of the potato."
It's slightly nonsensical and a bit lofty but it drives home a point that mashed potato is an important stable food in the West.
Keep it simple
A scour around the web will find many recipes for mashed potato but most of them miss the point.
They all try and add a certain twist to the magical form of the potato but hear it now (from an expert)....mashed potato is just mashed potato - maybe a bit of butter and a little milk but nothing, absolutely nothing, else!
Potato masher
From my Amazon links below, you may (hopefully) see some bastardisations of potato mashers. However the image at the top of this text is the classic masher. Indeed, a design classic that will outlive the modern masher....and all of us.
Best food with mash (imho!)
1) Sausages = Sausage and mash.
2) Fish Fingers = Fish Fingers and mash.
3) Mince = Mince and mash.
4) Boil-in-the-bag cod in butter sauce - Fish and mash.
For mash get smash
Cadburys tried to convince the British public in the 1970's and 1980's to use their dried mashed potato - just add boiling water and off you go!
For some reason I can't see this type of marketing working these days -and it really is a poor substitute.
Here is a collection of all the Smash adverts. I can't remember the first one but the next lot are very familiar to people of a certain age.
As a child I wanted my mother to buy some Smash but just because I wanted my tea and mashed potatos earlier!
