What is Freemasonry?

a brief overview

Freemasons For Dummies Masonic Reference GuideFreemasonry is a fraternal organization (or brotherhood) that was formed in the late 16th to early 17th century. Although the exact origins of Freemasonry is debated. To join you must fit several requirements and in some jurisdictions membership is by invitation only. There is an estimated six million Freemasons worldwide, two million being in the United States alone.

The fraternity is separated into independent Grand Lodges for each jurisdiction, then broken down further into subordinate lodges. These Grand and sub Lodges each adhere to a set of principles that can vary depending on the lodge. There is no single governing body that presides over worldwide Freemasonry.

To be a Freemason, a man must believe in a higher being. Regular Freemasonry requires that its candidates believe in a Supreme Being, but the interpretation of this term is subject to the conscience of the candidate.

The icons used by the Freemasons are symbols of stonemasons tools and implements against the backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple. The tools are meant to convey what has been described by both Masons and critics as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."
