The famous Square & Compass of Freemasonry can be found emblazoned on a vast and dizzying array of products that range from mundane to unusual.
Meaning of the Square and Compass
The Universal Symbol of Freemasony
The square and compass, with the letter "G" in the center, is the universally recognized symbol of Freemasony -- Sometimes abbreviated as F&AM (for Free and Accepted Masons) or AF&AM (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons).
The square and compass are, of course, tools of architects and builders, and Freemasonry uses many of the symbols and concepts of building in its rituals and ceremonies.
The square is the builder's square -- used to make perfect right angles. Right angles are critical in construction, to ensure that walls, floors, roofs, doors, etc., meet at the correct angle. In Masonry, the square is symbolic of using conscience and morality to ensure the "rightness" of one's actions and behavior.
The compass is used to draw perfect circles and arcs. The compass represents restraint -- the ability of the Mason to draw a boundary line around his desires and passions, and to live within that circle of restraint and moderation.
The G in the symbol stands for "God." Or, perhaps, Geometry, depending on who you ask.
Taken together, the Masonic Square & Compass containing the letter G represent God as the "Supreme Architect of the Universe." During the course of a man's Masonic life, he will learn a great many other symbols and meanings, all involving architecture and construction, that represent a variety of concepts related to living his life as a good man, a good citizen, and a good husband and father.
