Massage therapy is an ancient healing art that has been practiced for thousands of years in both the east and western cultures. The art was mainly lost in Europe but in the past few hundred years there has been a resurgence of the practice worldwide. This could be due in part to a trend to want natural healing and therapies.

The use of touch in massage is a very effective way of relieving stress and soothing painful muscles and giving the body a general feeling of relaxation and revitalization. There are several types of massage but most have now become a blend and this is often what happens as some therapist incorporate the many massages they have been taught. There are still traditional massages like Thai, Shiatsu and Chinese remedial.

There are now several clinics and spa where you can have a massage and enjoy the experience. The type of massage you choose is up to you. Most people have some parts of their bodies and or muscles that are sore or painful and they want the massage to give them relief in those areas.

Preferably I like Shiatsu done in the traditional way. You remain fully clothed and the massage is performed on a futon or mat on the floor. This is a Traditional Japanese massage and Shiatsu simple means - finger pressure. It is believe this massage started in the sixth century. The massage follows the twelve main meridians of the body. This system therefore, deals with body energy know as Chi and the therapist will allow the chi to flow smoothly. Some areas have to be tonified while others have to be sedated.

Some massages are performed while the client is fully clothed while other massages are through skin contact and the use of oils or balm.

Massage is best when carried out in a quiet relaxing atmosphere. This can be achieved through the use of soft lighting and gentle background music. Massage is an excellent way to restore balance and harmony in our lives by soothing tight and painful muscles and reducing our stress levels. Massage therapy can truly be regarded as a perfect way to achieve a relaxed body with little effort on your part.
