Masskara Festival in Bacolod City

Masskara Festival is held annually in Bacolod City from October 1-20 and culminated near October 19, the city's Charter Inauguration Anniversary.

The Festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. A series of tragic events happened that time. As a way to pull the residents out of the pervasive gloomy atmosphere and boost the city' economy, they made the Masskara Festival. Bacolod City, also known as the City of Smiles, made this event as a reminder that no matter how difficult the situation they are in, they will still be able to survive and triumph over it.

The term Masskara was coined by the late artist Ely Santiago which is derived from two words: Mass, which means "many or multitude and Cara, which means "face". The festival is known for showcasing masks with smiling faces worn by participants, thus Masskara means "many smiling faces" or "multitude of smiling faces".
