Master or Jack?

Which is better, "best in the world" or can you be a master of being a jack-of-all-trades and still command a great income?

Master or Jack?

What is the best approach to becoming the best in the world?

In Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich," he discusses that specialization is far more profitable than general knowledge.

Even today, that axiom still rings true. Doctors who practice specialized medicine get paid more than those who practice generally. A musician who masters an instrument will generally demand more than ones who can play everything.

Why does it seem the modern workforce pushes employees to become more generalized?

Perhaps it's really a grand plan to pay workers less than what they could be making if they were "best in the world" at one thing. If so, what a brilliant plan that would be. Give your employees training to become "well-rounded," then pay them less for doing it.

Well, less than if they were "the best."

Still the question remains: Which is better, "best in the world" or can you be a master of being a jack-of-all-trades and still command a great income?

What do you have to say?

I dabble in a lot of things but can't say I'm an expert at any. But what I think and others see is rarely the same. I have been labeled an expert on a lot of topics. It doesn't always fit well.

Welcome to Squidoo, I agree that if you focus your attention in specific areas, it can only grow your insight into your speciality and widen the doors for other opportunities.

speaking of master of jack, was thinking about that this morning as it pertains to devid beckham (i know, completely dif subject!). he has a niche. he does one thing and does it well. everyone who knows soccer knows he is NOT a complete player. he doesn't play defense, he doesn't score, etc. but he is the greatest passer/corner kicker in the history of the sport. doing one thing has made him a legend. interesting ideas to think about. i've always considered myself a jack of all trades, and feel that that's helped me at dinner parties, but hurt me in the real world. what's the old saying, "do one thing and do it well"? hmm...
