Hoping to find websites with more information regarding determining first editions of this series, and maybe some of the differences between US editions and UK editions.

The only US edition difference I know of is that book 15 in the series was titled "The Truelove" in the US and "Clarissa Oakes" in other countries.

I don't have any info on first editions. Check The Patrick O'Brian Compendium and The Gunroom. They're both excellent sites for O'Brian fans and may have what you're looking for.

I have read all of these books umpteen times (once I reach the end of the series I start again at the beginning) and enjoy them every single time. Cool lens.

I read these stories a few years ago and I agree, they are some of the best historical fiction around. I'll definitely be reading them (all) again.

This is by far the best site for basic information on the most wonderful high adventure series ever. I guess hat means I'll have to join Squidoo now...OK

Great Lens! I love the books. Have you run across this fun book? Lobscouse & Spotted Dog: Which It's the Gastronomic Companion to the Aubrey/Maturin Novels. A couple fans decided to cook all the recipes from O'Brian's books... even the rats! Fascinating. Squid Angel blessed.

Thanks! Aye, I've heard of the "Lobscouse & Spotted Dog" book but never read it. There are many interesting dishes mentioned in the series.

Actually I was not a big fan, since when a dear friend of mine started calling me "Stephen Maturin".... so I had to find out if it was something good or not!!!! :)

I'm going through them for the second time in a row and don't know how I'll ever stop. These are the best novels I've ever read.

Totally agree. I haven't started reading it a second time yet but did listen to "Master and Commander" on audio book after I finished reading the series. Funny thing about that was hearing how many of the old naval terms I mispronounced when I read it.

great books and the inspiration taken from Thomas Cochrane's real-life story - I've lensrolled to my 'Unsung heroes' lens.

The only novels I've ever read more than once. The characters are delicious.

I must be one of the original addicts - I read them all, pretty much as they were published. I am also a fan of Thomas Cochrane, Earl of Dundonald, on whose exploits many of Aubrey's are based. (Likewise Hornblower, of course). Tom Muir
