Your typical home study set often includes a main textbook and a set of dvds containing video and audio instruction material. These video and audio training materials help you become more comfortable with dealing with clients and to properly induct and hypnotize your patients. Some packages may also be bundled with a workbook to track your progress and exercise what you have learned.

Since most insurance companies don't pay for long-term psychotherapy, many clients look for significant results in only a few therapy sessions, so there is always work available as a Hypnotherapist. In this case, it also helps to open a potential second career option that you can experiment with before you choose to fully commit to whether or not you want to become a Hypnotherapist full-time.

The National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists is the center for certification of all Hypnotherapists. The full list of requirements for certification is listed on the following URL:

For most applicants however, we require you to have the following requirements before being considered a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist:

1. Everyone: You must have obtained a graduate level degree from any of the academic disciplines of your institution (medical practitioners being the exception, must hold an appropriate Master or Doctorate degree). The full list of qualifying disciplines is in the link above.

2. Hypnotherapy training requirements: You must have accumulated at least 60 hours of classroom instruction.

3. Board Eligible status requirements: You may apply for certification as a Hypnotherapist as long as you have at least 30 or more hours of clinical hypnotherapy training, and that you have met the other requirements listed here. During this time, you will be given a certificate declaring yourself as "Board Eligible" during the waiting period. 4. NBCCH applicants: In addition to the above, the NBCCH applicant must be licensed or certified by the state in which he or she practices. If your state does not require a license or certificate to practice a mental health specialty, you may substitute it with acceptable national certifications with the ones that are found in the list at that link.

5. For those applying for public service certifications: The NBCCH-Public Service certification (also known as NBCCH-PS) are available to practitioners who work for an agency, school, or corporate setting.

6. Further certification: For those who wish to delve deeper in hypnosis training and certification, they may also choose to apply for Diplomate and Fellow certification, which requires 150 hours of successful treatments with clients, and 300 for the latter.
