Senior Citizens Graduate From College!

Every spring you hear of a senior citizen, often in their 90's, graduating with their first bachelors degree. Some might think it's cute to see a great grandparent in cap and gown. The real truth is one should admire these people who are using their golden years to get everything from associate degrees to masters.

You see, these retirees are not just enriching their intellectual lives, they are also adding as much as a decade of quality life to them.  Columbia University did a study of people over the age of 75 who maintained a schedule of light exercise, active reading and healthy diet; and their lives and longevity outstripped seniors who didn't do this by ten years.

Elderly Students Do Very Well!

Moving from secret to myth, the simple truth is old dogs can learn new tricks. Maybe these elderly students aren't planning to be brain surgeons or rocket scientists, but they are very often supplementing their knowledge in arenas they have always had an interest in.

For instance, one such graduate always appreciated and read her share of literature. Thanks to her new Bachelor's of Arts in Literature, she now has a deeper understanding of the conditions her favorite authors wrote under, what they were trying to do and thus winding up with a greater appreciation of why the work is considered great. Another is a retired engineer who got a degree in history so he could better appreciate the evolution of his profession. The best part is they are eligible for federal grants.

Financial Aid Is Available For Seniors!

What's even more encouraging is not only are a number of major institutions endorsing this behavior in spirit; they are also doing it financially. Companies such as Calgon have sent up special financial aid packages for people over the age of 35, and it doesn't discriminate if the person is over 62 either. Many universities offer senior citizens discounted admission rates, as low as $50 a class, although many of these classes are audit only. There are institutions such as the Janet Rankin Foundation, which has programs specifically set up for just this. Even governments have gotten into the act. Many U.S. states will wave tuition if the citizen takes the classes at one of their state schools.

Online master degrees have also become quite popular education options for seniors. This is due to the fact that while their minds may be as sharp as tacks, their physical condition might not handle the constant commuting like their 20-something counterparts. With the price of computers constantly going down, it's now quite easy for seniors to study from the comfort of their homes and still get their degrees.

Stay Young Longer By Constantly Learning

Returning to the living longer, healthier lives, what it all comes down to is our seniors are keeping their brains stimulated. Taking classes, doing reports and field studies and taking tests exercise their brains as much as pool walking provides their bodies with a good cardio workout. More than enough studies prove active brains mean better health.

So the next time you see an article about an octogenarian or older person getting a online college bachelor degree, realize this is more than just a human interest fluff piece. That senior is not only enriching his or her intellectual life, but adding ten more quality years to enjoy it.
