Legend says that long ago the Emperor of Heavens, while celebrating one of his birthdays, had called all the animals together for a feast. As fun for the party, the Emperor asked all the animals to participate in a race. The Emperor told each of them that they would be set on a path to heaven based on how they ranked in the race. The grand prize was that the winners, and there would only be 12, would have their animal name assignd to the Chinese calendar.



Of course all the animals wanted to be winners. Anticipating the race the next day morning, two very close friends, the rat and the cat decided to start the race together. The morning of the race however, the rat went off without waking up the cat.

The rat then came to a river and didn't want to lose time crossing it, so it sweat talked the Ox to carry it across. As soon as the Ox touched land the mouse jumped off its back ran as fast as its feet would carry it to the palace of the Emperor where he was announced the first winner of the race.

The ox came second followed by the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and the pig and the rat became the first of the Chinese calendar. The cat could not make it as it slept on waiting for the mouse; ever since that incident, the cat wants to pounce on a mouse whenever it sees one (lol).
