Match Point, One of Woody Allen's Finest Movies
After some of the movies that have been coming out of Woodyland lately I was surprised(astonished, really) by Woody's latest entry in his long list of little tales that experiment with the idea of a random universe where criminals often "get away with it." Match Point, like the other similiar tales, is based on the tiniest of chance happenings and the changes those can cause.
Using Tennis as a metaphor for life and even to explain those coincidences, Woody showcases his latest muse, Scarlett Johansson in a challenging role, that she handles with her usual aplomb.
The movie also deals with the age old idea of Class vs. Goodness in supposedly High Society, and exposes some of the fallacies behind that idea.

Why I Love Match Point
Match Point Movie Review
First of all I love it bcause Woody is not in it...not even as a character, which is rare. Usually he is either in the middle of it all, or casts someone to play a part he bases on himself or a fantasy of himself. So that was very refreshing to start off with. But getting beyond that, Woody has an interesting way of filmmaking. He believes the casting is of utmost importance and that once you complete picking the cast, the director's job is to get out of the actors' way, and let them do their job.
Of course, his dialogue so defines the characters that he is assured good performances. His writing is brilliant.
In Match Point Woody uses the metaphor of tennis to drive home his belief that we live in a random universe that depends more on luck than anything else. He weaves this theme through every scene and subplot.
And what a SUB world all these plots are in. There is not a truly nice person in this story: they're all either greedy, lustful, calculating, or all three and at the core, will do whatever it takes to get what they want...going shockingly further than you can imagine given the spectacular surroundings they inhabit, and which one would think they would take better care of. But not to worry, in this random universe, luck always intervenes to favor the "upper crust" which makes it a morals play, set in London, with the usual spectacular backdrop of the city setting the mood.
Of course it has a wonderful soundtrack. Woody always provides gorgeous music...music appropriate to the age of the story.
This is a dark comedy presented in a light and charming way. As he usually does, Woody got all the elements working together to tell the story. I was mesmerized.

Match Point in the Blogosphere
- Berlin 2012: Jayne Mansfield's Car – review
- If there are weaknesses here, it's that the Thornton/Epperson script wobbles a little in its presentation of its English upper-crust characters ? very hard to do, as Woody Allen found out in Match Point, if you're American.
- TV & Radio Wednesday February 15
- (2011) Match Point (Sky Movies Greats, Sky 022, 8.30pm). Woody Allen's fable about the part that luck plays in destiny was loved by the Americans (?The film-maker's best in quite a long time,? said Variety), and loathed by the British (?As flat-footed ...
- 'Midnight in Paris:' I Loathe It
- Of those ranks, perhaps no film's success is more perplexing than Woody Allen's ode to Paris. At the box office, Midnight in Paris is the highest grossing of the director's 42-film career. It has made dozens of critics' Top 10 lists, earned Golden ...

- Am a big Woody Allen fan. Got on board with 'Sleeper' many years ago and never looked back! Didn't think this was one of his best at first, but recently watched it again and, as with many Woody movies, there's so much more second time around. Really enjoyed your lens. Many thanks!

- Oh I did not like this movie. I went into thinking it was a love story and it felt like a train wreck. It did make me very emotional though. :)
