Why swim while pregnant?

They say swimming is just about the best exercise you can do during pregnancy. Your back aches and the baby is pressing against your bladder. But when you get in the water, you feel lighter and the water supports the weight of your belly as it gets larger. Pressure is taken off sore joints.

You do need to check with your doctor, though, to make sure it's safe for you to swim.

Reasons why you may not be able to swim while pregnant.

* Placenta praevia, where the placenta is lying low in the womb, suggests you should only float in the pool and not do any strenuous exercise.

* If your water breaks, you need to avoid the risk of infection. So if you are near the end of your third trimester, it's probably safer to stay out of the pool altogether.

* If you have any heart conditions or high blood pressure, you must check with your doctor as to what you can and can't do.

* Since evidence now shows that overheating can harm the baby, you should avoid hot tubs, Jacuzzis and saunas.
