Math and Music

Many math concepts can be taught with music.  Functional Melodies is a collection of lesson plans written by Scott Beall.  Right now this lens includes an outline of one of his lessons with some of my student's reviews.  After my students have posted their comments I will add mine at the bottom.

Please pardon the dust since the lens is under construction.

Extra Credit for My Students

Attention Students

If you would like a little extra credit you may post reviews of the lesson Functional Composer here. You do need to become a member of Squidoo. If you decide to become a member, please don't use more than your first name and last initial.

After becoming a member, you may create your own lenses and explore others. Please, remember to keep all of your content and comments school appropriate. If not, I will have to delete your comments and break links to your other lenses and profile. I don't really want to do that.

Sample Lesson: Functional Composer

The Scenario
"A composer is trying to write a piece of music. She has been inspired with a little melody (motif) but can't seem to come up with any more music...." The lesson goes on to show how basic transformations can give her ideas to modify the original melody.

Click here to hear sample segmentThe Original Motif
Students begin by listening to the original melody. They transcribe it in musical notation and create a graph to represent the melody. Shown here in bold.

The Transformations
The students then listen to changes to the original melody. They transcribe the new melody in musical notation, create a graph to represent it and express the transformation with an Algebraic equation.

A Final Composition
The lesson ends with a composition created from the original motif, the transformed melodies, and some added harmony.
