Struggling With Math?
We assume that because we know how to do something, everyone else knows how to do it too. Likewise if we find something easy to do, everyone else must find it easy to do as well.
However, the only reason we're able to do anything with ease is because we were shown and taught how to do it properly. Who sees a bicycle for the first time and instantly knows how to ride it? Why then, do we assume that kids know how to do their math homework when in reality they have probably never been shown how to do it correctly?

Math Study Skills Are Learned
Let's start with the basics of good study habits --
- You need a quiet distraction free place to do your homework. Video games and music don't mix well with homework.
- Do your homework shortly afters chool. Leaving it until the last minute, means rushing and more errors.
- Focus and don't daydream. Use a timer if you have to. If there is something you don't understand, just try your best and move on. Homework shouldn't take all night.

Strategies and Skills To Study Math
As you go through your school career you'll develop strategies and skills to study math, but these basic skills will make a good foundation.
For the more complex subjects like math it really helps to have a study guide or some reference material that covers the math topics you learned in class. Of course you have your textbook but this can be a struggle to follow and how often do you come home knowing how to do your math because you got it in class?

Repetition Reinforces Math Concepts
Does your school have a tutoring program? If so, take advantage of it. Check library bulletin boards. Often college students will tutor for not much money. Look into getting an online tutor. To learn math well, you need to reinforce the concepts you learned in class. The only way to do that is to work lots of math problems until you know the concepts backwards and forwards.

Homework and studying are learned skills. If you're struggling, be proactive and get help.

- Repetition is important for practicing math skills. Our favorite way is through hands-on activities and board games. Do you have any favorite ones that you use when tutoring?
