Since 1997, I have spent a large amount of my time looking for and reviewing excellent open content for learning on the Internet. This lens focuses on some of the terrific websites that offer free knowledge about mathematics.
Because Internet is so vast, it might seem obvious to think that there are thousands of excellent math websites. There are two reasons this is not so. First, math is a narrow academic subject. It has relatively few topics compared to, for example, biology or history. Second, for academic subjects — same as for search engines, booksellers, and blogs — a few emerge as dominant. Some of these are gorillas and others are niche leaders for small topics.

Gorillas of Mathematics
- Mathworld
- A project by the software company Wolfram Research, Mathworld is the finest resource for mathematics online.
- Math2.org
- Once known as Dave's Math Tables, Math2.org was the best resource for math from its creation in 1995 through the turn of the century. It remains excellent. It is still, as it always has been, the pro bono work of David Manura.
- Wikipedia Mathematics
- The Wikipedia article on mathematics is outstanding and will probably keep growing, getting better and more gorillaish.

- MIT Math Courseware
- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is placing materials for thousands of course openly online. This link is to those materials for mathematics.

- This Scottish university provides biographical and history collections combining to form a thoroughgoing history of mathematical achievements.

- The interactive Internet has proven and ideal interface for calculations. Dozens of types of calculations can be done here.

- This is a showcase of many kinds of art based on math.
- Fibonacci
- Wander through the ideas and images here around Fibonacci numbers, the Golden Section, and Golden String.
