Consider alternative beds and mattresses when floor space is a premium

When floor space in your bedroom is at a premium, mattresses for loft, bunk, and murphy beds are a great alternative to sacrificing square feet of living space.

Mattress Alternatives for Small Spaces

For many years, the loft bed has been the preferred means to add space to college dorm rooms. Now loft beds are becoming a trendy choice for children's rooms. With a loft bed, the mattress is placed on a platform that is several feet off the ground. This space below the bed is perfect for work or seating where there once would have been space for a bed. As loft beds become more common, so have the many add-ons that are available. Some models have a built-in futon mattress as the bottom layer. This futon is great for additional seating that may be required during the day and because it's a futon mattress, it can also convert to extra sleeping space at night when needed. When your kids have friends sleeping over at your house, this loft and futon combo allows for both children to sleep in a real bed instead of one on the floor.

Another space saving option offered on some loft bed models is a built-in desk or computer station. For teens and college students, this provides valuable study space in an otherwise small room. Most young people don't mind climbing the ladder at night to go to sleep. In addition to a desk being underneath the loft, some bed manufacturers include a built-in dresser. In my opinion, this is the best way to maximize storage space in a tight space.

The premium of these loft beds is the All-In-One version. It has a twin or full size mattress up top. Underneath there is a wardrobe for hanging clothes, drawers for storage, a desk and a slide out mattress or trundle for extra sleeping space.

Bunk Beds
If you have a large family with few bedrooms, it's likely some of your children will have to "double up." Although some bedrooms can accommodate multiple beds, bunk beds are a great way to maximize space. Most bunk beds use two twin mattresses , however there are models that use a twin mattress over a full mattress or two full size mattresses. If you have a bedroom with high ceilings, it is possible to sleep three to a bed with the infamous triple bunk bed. No doubt, if you can fit a triple bunk in a bedroom it's a much cheaper alternative to building an addition to your home.

Murphy Beds Hide the Evidence
An older and less popular but still very practical option for small spaces is the Murphy bed. These beds are designed to allow a mattress to be folded inside
