M Audio Review: Fast Track Pro vs Firewire Solo

For most basic recording these two equally priced audio interfaces by M Audio offer more than enough to get good results. In this review I'll try to define their features in detail and hopefully help in deciding which one is better for your personal needs.

M Audio Fast Track Pro Review

The M Audio Fast Track Pro is one of the most popular audio interfaces in the world, and in my opinion the more versatile out of these 2. The Fast Track Pro has 2 very decent sounding mic pres, with phantom power and pad switches, 2 line/ instrument combo inputs and direct monitoring.

It also has midi connections and a stereo digital S/PDIF in and out. That's quite a feature set, making it well suited for most home recording needs. It's also perfect for computer based Dj'ing; it has 4 RCA unbalanced outs, a cue control and the headphone output can be switched between pairs of outputs. Combine a DJ mixer, a powered monitor and the included Ableton Live lite software and you should be able to cover rent!

There is a pair of balanced outputs for use with prosumer monitors. If you have any external processors the 2 inputs have an insert each. For recording guitar, bass, keyboards, voice, acoustic instruments, podcasting and especially for DJ's; it seems that almost anything you throw at the Fast Track Pro it's capable of doing.

M Audio Firewire Solo Review

The M Audio Firewire Solo is perfect for a singer/ songwriter, podcaster, or anyone that only needs one mic pre. The Firewire Solo is stereo though, allowing for the recording of keyboards, drum machines, guitar multi effects or any other stereo signal, but mic XLR inputs there's only one.

Apart from the mic input there's an instrument D.I. and a pair of unbalanced inputs in the back. The S/PDIF connection expands the inputs and outputs by 2. A lot of mic pres and guitar multi effects these days come with S/PDIF out, letting you record a clean digital signal straight to your computer. Another feature of the Firewire Solo is that is rack mountable.

Not every time more is better, if there is no USB port in your computer available or you're not into DJ'ing the Firewire Solo is perfect. You could have a mic, a guitar and a stereo keyboard permanently connected. It has no midi connectors, but most present day midi controllers are USB powered and unless you play outboard synths this should not be a problem.
