Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice

Marcia Brady was the quintessential 70s teenager. She seemed to have it all—looks, brains, a sunny disposition, and confidence to spare. Like the other child actors who played her siblings on The Brady Bunch, Maureen McCormick graced the covers of teen magazines and drew screaming fans at appearances all over the country. Her life seemed ideal. But behind the scenes a different series of dramas were unfolding in the McCormick household, and those problems were carried into Maureen's post-Brady Bunch life. I heard about Here's the Story when it was first published, but never got around to reading it. I love to read biographies, and picked this book up at Barnes & Noble while on a quest for something light and interesting to read. This book piqued my curiosity. Did Marcia and Greg secretly make out on the set? Were Maureen and Eve Plumb really best friends, or did Eve harbor resentment against her more popular TV sibling? Did straight-laced Greg (gasp!) smoke weed? You'll know the answers to these probing questions and more by the end of Here's the Story by Maureen McCormick.

A Few Facts Courtesy of Wikipedia

Maureen Denise McCormick is an American actress, reality show participant, and recording artist. She is best known as a child actor who played Marcia Brady in the television series The Brady Bunch from 1969 to 1974. McCormick had an on-again-off-again romantic relationship with fellow Brady Bunch cast member Barry Williams that began while the series aired. Their first romantic kiss was during the filming of the Hawaiian episodes. On March 16, 1985, she married Michael Cummings, who had never seen or heard of The Brady Bunch. The couple fell in love immediately upon meeting in a church. They have one child, Natalie Michelle Cummings (born May 19, 1989). The family lives in Westlake Village in Southern California.

All I ever hear is Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!

- Jan Brady, Marcia's younger sister

None of us had any idea that that line, written by veteran comedy scribe Ben Starr, would take on a life of its own. Ever since that show aired, I can legitimately say, "All I ever hear is Marcia, Marcia, Marcia."

Maureen McCormick on The Brady Bunch

It was 1972! Our home was untouched by the world around us. Imagine if the writers had dealt with Greg worrying about the draft, Carol and Mike spicing up their sex life by skinny-dipping with the neighbors, Marcia hiding a boy in her bedroom, or Jan staying out all night after seeing a rock concert.

The Brady Bunch

The Brady Bunch House

Circa 1969

All of the establishing shots of the house were done before the series aired, so nothing seemed to change for the show's five-year run. A phony window was attached to make it appear the house had a second story. Why this particular house? The show's producer, Sherwood Schwartz, thought it looked like the kind of place an architect would live in.

Brady Bunch House 40 Years Later

Photographed July 28, 2009

One of my friends lives across the street from The Brady Bunch house, so I thought I'd snap a picture while I was in the area. It's a little unnerving to see tour buses driving through this quiet residential neighborhood in Studio City, California. The fence is attractive as well as functional. It keeps looky-loos from peeking through the window to see the Brady's living room (which only existed on Stage 5 at Paramount Studios—four decades ago!)
