Mauritius in a Nutshell
AMauritius PackagesMauritius is a small island located in the Indian Ocean with vast multicultural diversity. It is located east of Madagascar and south of Seychelles. The island was first discovered by Arab sailors, later occupied by Portuguese sailors, and then first colonized by the Dutch. They settled there in 1598 but abandoned the island by 1710; they left behind irreversible damage to the island, wiping off the flora and fauna-the dodo, in fact, had become extinct because of extensive hunting and the black ebony tree was depleted due to exploitation of the timber. Mauritius became an independent nation by 1968, becoming a republic under the leadership of Aneerood Jugnauth. Today, Mauritius is still an enchanting island, and Mauritius holidays are always unforgettable. The contrasting multitudes of colors, tastes and cultures set in turquoise waters make Mauritius deserving to be rightfully called Eden on Earth.
Climate
Mauritius boasts of a tropical climate, which means warm and dry winters on Mays and hot and humid summers on Novembers. Be aware of tropical cyclones that often occur by the end of December until March. It only has two seasons, rainy and dry. Summers can get extremely hot with heavy rains, so be sure to book Mauritius packages during dry season.
Where to Go
Tour the Moka Mountains by foot, bike or four-wheel drive. You can go deep sea fishing around the Indian Ocean to capture many exotic species of fish. Mauritius holidays are never complete without a visit to Grand Baie, where you can experience extreme water sports like parasailing, submarine, sailing, water skiing and wind surfing. If you don't fancy getting wet, then try good dry fun by hopping in on a safari jeep that will take you to its numerous natural reserves and parks. You can see lots of exotic animals like zebras, java deer, ostriches, monkeys and antelopes in their natural habitat. Where to Stay
The wonderful hotels Mauritius that are best known among tourists are the Bungalow Vanille, Le Canonnier, Le Maison d'Ete and Le Mauricia. Most of these hotels are located in Royal Road. Other hotels worth noting are The Residence, Rialto Villa, Royal Palm Hotel and Villas Oasis.
Warnings and Issues
Mauritius has a medium risk of dengue figures, due to the mosquitoes being prevalent in tourist and rural zones. Be sure to bring along a decent mosquito repellent at all times. Sleep under a mosquito net during the night. Chikungunya virus is another epidemic in Mauritius. This should not turn you off and avoid having Mauritius holidays; just be sure to have yourself vaccinated before entering the island. Many of the beaches are also infested with sea urchins, so venture into the water with plastic shoes.
