They contain cane sugar from Mauritus!

Brown Sugar Cubes (Mauritius) by ChefShop

Amazon Price: $9.49 (as of 12/30/2009)Buy Now

These roughly shaped, light brown sugar cubes by ChefShop.com can be found in every cafe and teashop in France - they contain cane sugar from Mauritius . They have a warm, honeyed flavor and are prized for their melting qualities. The cubes disintegrate slowly, but melt completely, so you can actually control how much sugar you put in your cup! Fish them out before they're gone if that's how you like your coffee. The rich flavor makes a nice change from everyday white sugar, and a small bowl of cubes turns a cup of tea into teatime!

Mauritius, a volcanic and mountainous island in the Indian Ocean, lies 2000km (1240 miles) off the southeastern coast of Africa, due east of Madagascar. The island-state stands on what was once a land bridge between Asia and Africa called the Mascarene Archipelago. From the coast, the land rises to form a broad fertile plain on which sugar cane flourishes. Some 500km (310 miles) east is Rodrigues Island, while northeast are the Cargados Carajos Shoals and 900km (560 miles) to the north is Agalega. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1505, Mauritius was subsequently held by the Dutch, French, and British before independence was attained in 1968. A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa's highest per capita incomes. Recent poor weather and declining sugar prices have slowed economic growth, leading to some protests over standards of living in the Creole community.
