Born Frederick Parrish in Philadelphia in 1870, who later would be called Maxfield Parrish left this world on March 30, 1966. While here he blessed us with his passion and imagination that is unforgettable.
Looking at his work I want to delve into the moment he painted each piece. They remind me of a fairy tale come to life. He has influenced so many since, you see it all the time in other peoples art. Who better could they model in regards to creating a world that feels nebulous to us and yet tangible at the same time. You just want to climb right in the picture and live there, find peace there or slay the dragon. In some of his pieces there are very strong overtones, passion and excitement abound. Ahhh to live inside of the mind of Maxfield Parrish.

Frederick Parrish (he would adopt the name Maxfield later) was born in Philadelphia in 1870 - of the generation of Orson Lowell, C.D. Gibson, Elizabeth Shippen Green, W.T. Benda, Franklin Booth, Howard Chandler Christy and F.R. Gruger. That made him almost 14 when he decorated the letter below - so take heart all you young doodlers. He illuminated many such letters that he wrote from London and Paris during 1884-86. John Goodspeed Stuart has collected many of them in his fascinating book, Young Maxfield Parrish (1992). Maxfield Parrish (1870 - 1966) was an American painter and illustrator. Born Frederick Maxfield Parrish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began drawing for his own amusement early in his life. He went on to pursue a career that was to last for many decades and effectively shape the Golden Age of Illustration, and the future of American visual art in general. Launched by a commission to illustrate Kenneth Grahame's The Walls Were as of Jasper in 1897, his repertoire was to include many prestigious projects such as Eugene Field's Poems of Childhood (1904) and the traditional Arabian Nights (1909).
