I GET A KICK OUT OF MAXINE

Maxine has an attitude and Maxine makes me laugh. Maybe the humor is for us "old folks" or "senior citizens" but Maxine says what she thinks. Maxine says what many of us think but would never dare to say outloud.

Maxine the crabby old lady was introduced back in 1986 by the Hallmark artist, John Wagner, and she is still going strong. Rock on, Maxine.

Since 1986 Maxine has really taken off. Not only is she on greeting cards but you can buy Maxine gifts from coffee mugs, calendars and t-shirts.

Maxine has a remark to make about everything; aging, your job, politics and life in general.

Arty-boy

Maxine calls John Wagner, Arty-boy.

John doodled as a young boy and his mother and grandmother further encouraged him by giving him art lessons and supplying him with art supplies as birthday gifts.

John, or Arty-boy, attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. He was then hired by Hallmark as part of the new artist group. In 1986 Hallmark started the funny Shoebox Greeting Cards and Maxine was launched into the public.

How did she get her name? John says "the people at work started calling her (Maxine) John's old lady". John thought that might get him into trouble with his wife....so, the employees had a contest and 30 of them entered the name Maxine. Maxine is the perfect name for this honery, old lady.

MAXINE'S DOG

I'm a dog lover but I am not so sure that Maxine is. She does have a dog named Floyd but Floyd always looks a little shocked, or distressed in some way or another. Not that Maxine would ever hurt Floyd, because she wouldn't. It's just that Maxine is pretty much interested in Maxine and not much else.

I'm pretty sure Maxine has never married unless it is something that she doesn't wish to talk about but then that doesn't fit her M.O. because Maxine talks about everything.
