Maxwell House: Is it Or Isn't It Good To The Last Drop?

Maxwell House "Good To The Last Drop"

Maxwell House is a brand of coffee first introduced to the world in 1892. It was named after the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. For many years, Maxwell House was the largest selling coffee brand in the United States, which probably explains why I remember it being my parents' coffee of choice, Good To The Last Drop.

On this page, discover the origins of the Good To The Last Drop advertising campaign, which is hugely familiar to North Americans and still in use by Maxwell House today.

Good To The Last Drop

Advertisement from the Saturday Evening Post in January 1946

The slogan Good To The Last Drop has been in use by Maxwell House since 1917. Some claim that it is the most famous line United States President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt ever uttered, although it has never actually been proven that Teddy Roosevelt uttered those famous words.

Despite that fact, Maxwell House used these words and attributed them to Roosevelt for many years. They provided a strong advertising slogan, a registered trademark and part of the company's logo, which is still used and widely recognized today.

In recent years Maxwell House had distanced itself from the Roosevelt claim saying instead that Clifford Spiller, a president of the General Mills company, originated the slogan.

In 2009, Turtle With Lemondade created a short video starrring Joe Wiegand that shared the Last Drop story. It has been attributed online to Maxwell House but given the lack of any sort of Maxwell House logo in the video, I am unsure if that is true or not.

I have also read that the Theodore Roosevelt Association, whose aim is to keep Roosevelt's memory alive, has proof that the President did utter those famous words...

I guess we may never know the whole truth about the advertising slogan Good To The Last Drop.

President Theodore Roosevelt's Version of the Good To The Last Drop Story

As delivered by popular Roosevelt impersonator, Joe Wiegand.

Although Wikipedia attributes this short video to Maxwell House, there does not seem to be any official link between this short and Maxwell House. If it was actually a commercial or just a video produce by Turtle With Lemondade, I cannot say but it does do a good job of representing the Roosevelt story, at least as presented by Maxwell House over the years.

Maxwell House Coffee Mug

In general, the Maxwell House coffee mugs on eBay seem to be reasonably priced. Occasionally, an older set that looks more like a teacup comes available and commands a stronger price but if it is a Good To The Last Drop mug you are after, you should not have a hard time finding an affordable one.

February 2002 in Afghanistan was a very cold time and we had to stay up countless days without sleep. There was a time where without any source of heat, we would pour Maxwell house coffee in our mouth and wash it down with freezing cold water in our canteens. YUM!

I certainly am familiar with the Maxwell House coffee name but I'm not a big coffee drinker so I'm not sure if I have actually ever had Maxwell House coffee. Usually when I drink coffee it's from Starbucks or someplace similar and has a lot of "stuff" in it. ;-)
