Who is mbgphoto?

Welcome to my lensography. I am Mary Beth Granger, aka mbgphoto or Grandma MaryBeth to three special little girls. I have been married to my best friend, Ray, for 40 years and we have two wonderful children, Linda and John.

I retired three years ago to start the next phase of my life and Squidoo has become a part of that phase.

In this lens I will tell you a little about how I got to this point and what is important to me. It will also serve as an organizer for my lenses, which are growing in number each day.

How I got to this Point

My first 57 years

Three years ago I retired and decided to take a whole new look at life. I see my retirement as the beginning of the next phase of my life.

Here are some of the keys points in my life before my retirement.
  • I was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1949. I was the oldest of four children. My parents owned a small business and were wonderful examples of a strong work ethic,
  • I grew up in a religious family. Church and family were important. I attended Lutheran grade school and high school.
  • My parents loved to travel and I have many wonderful memories from our summer road trips.
  • I married at 19 to Ray and we have been blessed with two wonderful children, Linda and John.
  • Ray and I worked together in our own business in the early years. We often struggled with finances, but our faith in God, and our love of family and each other pulled us through.
  • After we sold our business, I started doing taxes for H&R Block. I worked for 9 years as a preparer, an office supervisor and an instructor before I went into management.
  • When my children started high school I went into management, progressing from district manager, to assistant regional manager to regional director. When I retired I was director over 14 districts in Missouri and Illinois.

My career saw us move five times as I was promoted. We moved betwen St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City, Missouri. My wonderful husband was my biggest supporter and helped tremendously in each of the moves.
He was also able to follow his dream and return to the radio field. He worked at different stations as an on-air personality and as a producer.
  • Both of our children graduated from college and then went on to graduate school. Linda is now a Sr. VP in a marketing research firm and John is an attorney. Ray and I are very proud of both of our children.
  • At age 56, I fulfilled a longtime goal and finally graduated from college. I received a BS in Business Management!!
  • At age 57, I decided that I had enough of the corporate world, and corporate stress. All of the business travel, which at first was exciting, had become a drag. I was ready for the next phase of my life. Ray had retired five years earlier and I was ready to join him.

Retirement is Wonderful

everything I hoped for and more

I have not looked back on my decision to retire for one minute. I thoroughly enjoy this phase of my life. As you can see in the photo, my husband and I are St Louis Cardinal baseball fans. We now spend each March watching spring training in Jupiter, Florida.

Retirement has given me the freedom to do many of the things I have always wanted to do. When we are in town I spend time at water aerobics, reading, and volunteering and of course squidooing.

Our children and our grandchildren live out of town, so we travel regularly to visit them. We have three beautiful granddaughters who are our pride and joy. Rachel (5) and Ella (3) live in Atlanta and new baby Kate (1month) lives in Kansas City.

Ray and I both love to travel so when we're not visiting the grandkids we are planning our next road trip. My lenses reflect much of our travels. I love photography so it is great to mix travel and photography! We are always looking for places that I can photograph.

The quote in the box below is off of a card I received for my 60th birthday in February. It pretty much sums up how I feel about this phase of my life.

Follow your Dreams

Sometimes the best things
in life happen after you've
done what you're "supposed" to do
and are free to
follow your dreams.
