MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology
When back in Switzerland, Müller began to develop a footwear technology that would make the natural instability of soft ground such as Korean paddy fields or the East African savannah accessible also to those, who have to walk on hard surfaces. After years of research and development the shoe was finally launched on the marked in 1996.
Firm Celebrity Butts
After a couple of years in store shelfs the shoe has really caught celebrity attention. That the shoe alleviate back pain and reduces the stress on the knees is probably just a small bonus. Their claim is that it gives them a firmer butt and reduce cellulite.Celebrity users are many. Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Teri Hatcher, Heidi Klum, Liz Hurley, Cher and Sadie Frost are among the most prominent.
Jemima Khan, known as Hugh Grants girlfriend, has on several occasions expressed thanks to MBT for her firm butt.
Today approximately one million pairs are sold every year, distributed in over 20 countries.
So What Makes Them Work?
It's all about instability, core conditioning. Our bodies have lost the benefits of unstable environments offered from natural grounds. Due to the artificial concrete jungle we've created, our bodies are not challenged as much to keep them in good shape. In health clubs thankfully it is becoming increasingly common to see the focus upon training shift to Neural control - recruiting the right muscle fibres in the right order to stabilize the body.
After Karl Muller found he could relieve his constant back ache by walking barefoot through paddy fields in South Korea he next began to study the Masai warriors, a semi-nomadic tribe from East Africa, who despite their incredible height were able to walk vast distances each day with perfect posture whilst barefoot upon natural ground.
Convinced they were a gimmick, I don't think I would have ever bought them. Then a friend of mine started loosing considerable weight after he started to walk his regular walks using MBTs! I bought a pair the day after he told me.
"Wear them an hour a day for the first week until your body becomes accustomed to wearing them" you are warned.
For the first hour on the first day, it was a rather intense situation. A lifetime of walking challenged.
Your balance is severely tested: your ankles, legs and glutes (backside) muscles bare the brunt of this new altered walking surface. Your obliques (abdominal muscles responsible for twisting movements) and deep pelvic muscles engage, the spine also lengthens to balance more effectively on the Masai sensor. It's the oddest sensation! It is definitely not a gimmick!
Most of us walk with our bodies behind our center of gravity. This constant state of imbalance weakens the hamstrings, buttocks, inner an outer thigh, and abdominal muscles.
MBT lifts and aligns your body on its center of gravity, thus forcing you to use these weakened muscles. As the body lengthens and tightens with every step, circulation improves, and strength is regained.
Perfect for the likes of me... too busy to make it to the gym as often as I should.
