John McCain and Sarah Palin, Republican Candidates for President and Vice President of the United States

It was the morning after the close of the Democratic National Convention and Barack Obama's grand speech when Republican presidential candidate John McCain took over the spotlight with the announcement of his choice for running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. What a surprise to the nation, most of whom replied, "Sarah who?"

The Republican National Convention is over, Sarah Palin has made her bring-the-house-down speech, and "Sarah" is the name on everyone's lips as the candidates hit the campaign trail.

As the campaign progresses, the McCain-Palin ticket popularity has risen and fallen (depending on whose poll you believe) as the candidates have continued to campaign - and to debate.

How do you feel about all this? What do you think of McCain's choice and the chance for the GOP ticket in November? Undecided? Read more about both Sarah Palin and John McCain here, then vote in our polls and leave your comments below.

Who is Sarah Palin?

(From Wikipedia)

Sarah Louise Palin (; née Heath; born February 11, 1964) is the eleventh and current Governor of the U.S. state of Alaska.

Palin was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and the city's mayor from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for Lieutenant Governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 until her resignation in 2004. She was elected Governor of Alaska in November 2006. Palin is the first female governor of Alaska and the youngest person elected governor of that state.

Palin was the Republican Party's vice-presidential nominee for the 2008 United States presidential election, on the ticket with Senator John McCain. Palin was the second female candidate and the first Alaskan candidate of either major party on a national ticket, as well as the first female vice-presidential nominee of the Republican Party. Since the McCain-Palin defeat in the 2008 election, there has been speculation that she will run for president in the 2012 presidential election.Palin Fascination, Scorn Shows No Sign of Receding - Political News - FOXNews.com

Sarah Palin's Biography

Did you hear the one about the book that became a bestseller?

This one did, overnight. As soon as John McCain put Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin, on the map and in the news, everyone has wanted to learn more about her. This bio, written after Sarah Palin became governor, is now available in paperback or get the Kindle edition here.

n 2006 an angel-faced but tough 42-year-old former small-town mayor named Sarah Palin became a long-shot candidate for Alaska governor demanding a higher ethical standard in state government. The timing of her reform message and a widening scandal produced a tornado that reshaped the political landscape. Surprising everyone, Palin thumped by wide margins both a sitting governor in the Republican primary election and a former governor in the general election to become Alaska's first female chief executive and its youngest ever.

The present era demands a new style of leadership. In an age that values relationship over authority and one that is overwhelmed by a tidal wave of information, breadth of familiarity and depth of conviction are prized commodities. Sarah Palin brings both of those qualities to her new role as candidate for the vice presidency of the United States. Those qualities, her familiarity with a broad range of issues and her strong moral center, are just two of the leadership traits that have allowed her to organize and focus her efforts in office.

Using themes from her career in politics, Joe Hilley explores the leadership traits that made Palin successful and why those traits are an example of kind of leadership that will guide our nation through the 21st century.

Who is John McCain?

Meet the Republican candidate for President of the United States.

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona. He was the Republican nominee for president in the 2008 United States election.

McCain followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the United States Navy, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. McCain experienced episodes of torture, and refused an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.

He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981, moved to Arizona, and entered politics. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, he served two terms, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, winning re-election easily in 1992, 1998, and 2004. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain at times has had a media reputation as a "Category: wiktionary - :maverick|maverick" for his willingness to disagree with his party on certain issues. After being investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the Keating Five, he made campaign finance reform one of his signature concerns, which eventually led to the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He is also known for his work towards restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s, and for his belief that the war in Iraq should be fought to a successful conclusion. McCain has chaired the Senate Commerce Committee, has opposed spending that he considered to be pork barrel, and played a key role in alleviating a crisis over judicial nominations.

McCain ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, but lost a heated primary contest to George W. Bush. He secured the nomination in 2008 after coming back from early reversals, but lost to Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the general election.

John McCain Makes "Joe the Plumber" an Instant Celebrity

What's this about spreading around the wealth??

If you haven't heard about Joe the Plumber, then you must not have watched the third presidential debate, listened to the news, or talked to anyone around the water cooler. Joe is a real person, a plumber, who asked Obama what would happen to his taxes if his plumbing business made more than $250,000 a year. Here's the original discussion between Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher from Ohio and Barack Obama, followed by the discussion that took place during the presidential debate on October 15, 2008.

Did Barack Obama really say he wanted to spread around the wealth? Yes, he did, and he said it's a good thing for everybody. What do you think? Do you want Barack Obama to spread your wealth around or do you think you might be able to take care of that yourself, like maybe by creating more jobs as you expand your business. You can register your opinion on that by voting on November 4th.

For McCain to throw this inexperienced, unqualified woman in the race is an insult to every woman in the United States. To assume that women are this gullible, and cannot see through this ruse to get the "Hillary" votes is unforgivable. Wake up!

Well, it will be an interesting election this year for sure -- my mother is the political 'activist' in our household ... she kept hammering her point, 'wait and see who McCain chooses as a running mate.' Well, I'm wondering--do you also wonder--how do you feel should something happen to McCain [maybe die?] and then Palin is President. Are you 100% comfortable with that notion? 5***** and blessings my dear for a very TOPICAL lens worthy of attention. ;)

Palin is a great choice. She is 'for' life and thankfully not one of those extremist, socialist liberals with their high taxes on hardworking people, handouts to the lazy, and racist views. She is against the country club Democrats and Republicans. It's wonderful to see a true conservative again.
