In Defense of McDonald's
Ranked #6,165 in Food & Cooking, #114,921 overall
Where does the real responsibility lie?
I've long been against people who blame their problems on outside influences. My boyfriend makes me drink. My kids make me broke. McDonald's makes me fat.
Baloney.
McDonald's has become an easy target for lawsuits ranging from hot coffee burns on a woman's knees (here's your sign) to making people fat. But the truth is that McDonald's isn't some superhuman, next-to-God industry that strikes demands upon your eating habits. It's just a regular business, started by regular people, run by regular people. They're only crime is running business well.
Take this poll first
I'm guilty! I love McDonald's!
What business WOULDN'T want their customers to say this about them? Isn't this exactly what every business SHOULD be striving for? The BEST coffee in town. The PERFECT light meal. Top notch cleanliness. THE sure thing.
What's so wrong about that?
What makes McD's such an easy target?
-
They're big
Not only are they big, we made them that way. That's right. McD's didn't get big because they advertised a lot. They got big because they developed a product we love. So the consumers made them big, and then turned on them. -
They're familiar
It's easy to pick on ideas that everyone has heard about and can easily grasp. We can wrap our minds around food and health. Obviously though, not well enough. -
Everybody eats
Not everybody smokes. Not everybody drinks. Not everybody uses lead paint. But everybody eats. This means everybody can have an opinion. -
They're successful
This makes some people just a little jealous. If they weren't so successful, we wouldn't pick on them as much. Don't believe me? A&W hamburgers are just as bad for you.
Reports on McDonald's
- Big Mac: Inside the McDonald's Empire
- CNBC cameras and correspondent Carl Quintanilla traveled across the country and journeyed as far away as China to give viewers an unprecedented look at how a quick-service hamburger stand grew into one of the most famous brands on the planet.

McD's is no different than other food companies
-
Every business wants more business
Mars wants you to eat more M&Ms. Hershey's wants you to eat more peanut butter cups. Ben & Jerry's wants you to eat more ice cream. McDonald's wanting you to eat more hamburgers isn't a crime. It's business. -
If you don't want it, don't eat there
You don't go to Mexican restaurants looking for sushi, and you don't go to the ice cream shop looking for shrimp scampi. If you want fruits and vegetables, while you now CAN enjoy salads at McDonald's, you don't have to. Go someplace that sells fruits and vegetables. -
Don't forget the long tail
The long tail theory states that consumers eat many times as much "bad" food from "bad" restaurants that AREN'T McDonald's as they do from McDonald's. So for every 100 servings you eat of McDonald's, you're eating 1000 servings of candy bars, sugary soda, chips, gas station pizza, cake, Taco Bell, etc, etc, etc combined. Cutting out McDonald's solves only a small percentage of the problem. Then what?
Countering excuses
-
They give you so much food!
Order smaller portions. They make a small fry, they make a four-piece nugget, they make a one-patty cheeseburger. Or, take it home. The Big Mac reheats quite nicely. -
It's all so greasy.
Not so. They have fruit parfaits, fruit salads, veggie and chicken salads, and soup.
Truths about responsibility
-
No one forces you to eat McDonald's
No one is physically cramming it down your throat. If you don't like it, don't eat it. It is not your only option. -
You are responsible for what you put in your body
It is not McDonald's fault that you don't know how many calories are in a burger. If you are uninformed, take the initiative to find out. The information has been readily available for years. They're not hiding it anywhere. -
McDonald's can be a part of a healthy lifestyle
Just like soda and ice cream and chips can be part of a healthy lifestyle, so can McDonald's. Everything in moderation, and know when to quit. -
Every time you eat there, you support McDonald's
They have grown as a company due to the support of their customers. It's not a government conspiracy. It's good old-fashioned survival of the fittest, and you contribute to that when you choose McDonald's above other choices. If that's a problem, don't eat there. -
McDonald's doesn't make you fat
Overindulgence makes you fat. Lack of exercise makes you fat. Genetics makes you fat. Or rather, a combination of these makes you fat. But McDonald's is not the sole culprit.
Frivolous lawsuits I'd like to start
-
Baseball bat manufacturers
And golf club manufacturers for that matter. Maybe frying pan companies. Just like guns, you can kill people with those things! -
La-Z-Boy
It's their fault I can't get off my butt some nights. -
HGTV
If it weren't for the great shows, I might actually be outside landscaping instead of learning how to do those intricate wallpapering designs. -
Whoever invented Sudoku
It's your fault I almost missed my dentist appointment.
Now what do you think?

Someone left this comment:
"McDonalds is the easiest target because of its unhealthy fast food that can give innumerable amounts of children diabetes. You cant expect every parent to read the nutrition facts. Just check out super size me its completely true and the surgeon general on that movie who expains how bad this fast food is for americans. McDonalds is wrong for your health and there is no point in arguing that it is good for you in any way."
Personally, I think that if you say "you can't expect every parent to read the nutrition facts," you're saying that you can't expect every parent to be responsible. Not every parent is responsible, we know that much. But by saying you don't expect them to responsible is like saying you don't expect them to take care of their kids. Yeah, I would darn well hope we would expect them to do that.
In the end, you're responsible for what you put in your body, or allow your children to put in theirs.
Final thoughts
However, just as I don't want to hear anyone blame cigarettes for giving them lung cancer when they decided to smoke, I don't want to hear anyone blame what they ate when they chose to eat it. I generally have little sympathy for people who encounter problems and turn the other cheek, and even less for those who refuse to take responsibility for what they have done to themselves. The best living comes when you take control of your life. Otherwise you're only admitting that you're weak an not in charge. And for many who blame McDonald's and other things for making them fat, sick, gamble, etc., that may be true.
Is some McDonald's food bad for you? Yes. Is 80% of what they sell in the grocery store bad for you under the same circumstances? Yes. Will your grocery store ever be as easy a target as McDonald's? No, and that's a shame. It's also a whole other story.
Through moderation and limited visitation hours, McDonald's and I have learned to coexist quite well. I eat what I am hungry for when I decide I would like a treat, and make up for it with balanced meals and plenty of exercise the rest of the time. McD's supports me with a clean rest stop on the road, and I support McD's with my late night McFlurry runs.
I do believe we really can all just get along. Millions of people do it every day, and millions more can if they want to. Apple pie, anyone?
