M.C. Escher

Long before there was M.C. Hammer, there was M.C. Escher, a great Dutch artist whose works often played tricks on the eye and bewildered many viewer's minds.

Escher combined mathematics and art to produce mainly lithographs and woodcuts that challenged the viewers perception.

If you are not familiar with this amazing artist's work, let me be the first to introduce him to you. I intend to do this in hope that you too can share great joy and wonder at the astounding, images and video presented here.

My Introduction to Escher

Art Class

The first time I ever saw some art by M.C. Escher was in my first year of High School. I was in art class and my teacher was giving an art history lesson. This is also how I learned about all the great masters such as Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Renoir and others. However, on this particular day, my eyes were opened to a totally different concept of art.

That day, my teacher informed us that we would be learning about a Dutch artist who produced lithographs and woodcuts and was considered one of the world's great graphic artists. She then proceeded to show the class a slide show of all the great works of art he produced, while lecturing a synopsis of his biography. I was in awe.

As I marveled at the images projected onto the white movie screen, I wondered how it was possible not only for a man to conjure up such ideas but also how he managed to transfer these thoughts so convincingly to something that everyone could view and enjoy. It's as if escher was giving you a glimpse into his mind.

From that day forward, I've been a lifelong fan of Escher's work and have made it my mandate to try and educate others who might be missing out on his art.

Oh, I have always been fascinated by Escher's work. It is so spell-binding. I could stare at it forever. How his mind works must be on another level to come up with these tricks of the canvas. Great lens, thanks for sharing. Take good care, Rose
