Information about Multicultural Fraternities and Sororities

This lens focuses on fraternal organizations that considers themselves multicultural; either in their membership, title, mission or any combination of those.

Although fraternal organizations have existed for hundreds of years, the first multicultural greek organizations only emerged over the last 30 years. They were preceded by culturally-based Greek organizations (such as African-American, Latino, Asian, etc.). Because they are young organizations and many people may not be familiar with either the organizations themselves or the contexts in which they operate, I decided to create this lens.

National Multicultural Greek Council

An incorporated entity with 14 member organizations

The National Multicultural Greek Council was founded in 1998 and serves in an advisory capacity to its members. The council does however serve as an advocate for its members and multicultural greek life in general and works to maintain standards in the multicultural greek community.

Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity

Friendship, fellowship & fidelity - Unity AmonGST All!

Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau has probably the most interesting history among all multicultural greek organizations. Its roots date back to 1871, when a fraternity known as "Delphic" was founded. For years, this local fraternity fledged; until the 1950s when the fraternity became affiliated with Sigma Tau Gamma. However, state universities in New York issued a ban on national fraternities - returning the organization back to its roots.

In 1987, the fraternity was re-organized. Both names were incorporated to reflect the history and the fraternity became multicultural in its mission.
