Fading Icons
We live in a neighborhood that was built during the height of Modern Design in 1964. All around our little White House homes are being torn down and replaced by things our friend Dean likes to call Tuscan Tragedies.
My neighbor Didi and I like to walk through the streets and sightsee. We have decided that we need to document as many of these great homes before they are gone. It's a big project, but someone's got to do it.
This picture of the White House was taken the day before we signed the offer to buy it.
We've made a few upgrades in the past 5 years, but mostly to the inside. Things like a new furnace, electrical work, carpeting. Nothing major so far.
But now the time is coming. The flat roof has never been taken care of an is leaking. It sags 1 1/2 to 2" in the living room because the support poles were removed at some point. That means a new support beam and structural changes. That means new codes to adhere to.
The original Master Bath is so small the shower door hits the toilet bowl when opening it. The "new" kitchen cabinets that were installed in the 70's or early 80's by the intermediate owner (I think we are the 3rd in 43 years) are a piece of trash.
So where does one draw the line? What is the difference between restoring and re-doing a home like this? Let me know what you think. I'm up for any appropriate feedback.
Mid Century Beauties
Homes around the Southland
Some of these are from a recent tour of Case Study Homes in Hollywood Hills. I'll have to edit them, but here is a small taste. I didn't get fussy about having people in the photos. I thought that the was part of the appeal of taking them.
Mid Century Modernism Links
MCM Homes for Sale, and Events
These got a little mixed up, but there are some great events coming up you will want to know about, especially the current Palm Springs Modernism Week Feb 14-24th. The top 4 links are important now, so I moved them to the top. The Marmol-Radziner is also open during this weekend in the same area.
