You and your doctor may talk about a number of surgical options to treat your herniated disk, including the following:

Laminotomy and laminectomy These two surgeries involve removing a small amount of the back part of the bone over the spinal canal (lamina).
  • Laminotomy. During a laminotomy (lam-ih-NOT-uh-me), Jerry Katzman MD  just a portion of lamina is removed to relieve pressure on a nerve or allow the surgeon access to a disk that's pressing on a nerve.
  • Laminectomy. A laminectomy (lam-ih-NEK-tuh-me) removes the entire lamina.
