The Truth About MDS
Leukemia and breast cancer are common cancer forms known to most people. Only a few knows that other forms of cancer are becoming endemic; such as myelodysplastic syndromes.
Myelodysplastic syndromes, or MDS, are a group of hematological disorders or disruption in the production of blood cells by the bone marrow. The result may be an excessive amount of any, or all, types of blood cells: red, white, and/or platelet.
MDS syndrome was once known as 'pre-leukemia' because the disorder in blood production typically develops to leukemia. However, this term is no longer in use because it is quite misleading. MDS patients may or may not develop acute leukemia. When MDS transformed to acute leukemia, the condition is called Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML. This form of leukemia is more difficult to treat than the Primary AML, which is the case when patients have not suffered from any disease related to the bone marrow.

Environmental Factors in the Development of MDS
Researchers found out that there are many environmental factors on the development of MDS. One of the common environmental toxins is a known carcinogen called benzene. Various forms of leukemia and other types of cancer are typically linked to benzene. People who suffered from MDS are usually those who had prolonged exposure to the chemical, either at work or in the community, without knowing.
