Lasting Spring Flower Bouquets Thru Old Vintage Postcards

This lens explores the lasting beauty, and meaning of spring flowers thru old vintage postcards. A beautiful spring flowers bouquet is so special. A spring flowers bouquet can be even more special by knowing the meaning of flowers. For instance, an Iris flower can convey either wisdom or passion (depending on color). As a result, happy memories are created that can last long past the spring flowers bouquet's wilting. Preserve those special memories thru old, vintage postcards.

** This hard to find 1911 vintage Easter postcard to the right was published by Ernest Nister no. 2665.

What Spring Flowers Mean

Floriography - The Language of Flowers

Actor Hugh Jackman's character in the movie "Kate and Leopold" said to the brother of actress Meg Ryan's character while in a florist shop, "Every flower has a meaning Charles."

Leopold was right. Every flower does have a specific meaning. In the Victorian era, people were more likely to communicate with flowers than words. This explains why a large number of antique and vintage postcards had flowers on them. Flowers helped the sender communicate with limited space; especially on undivided backed postcards as no message was to be written on the back. Today, the choice of flower varieties has greatly expanded giving the sender a wider choice to help convey a sentiment. A sender's personal meaning gives flowers the right message now instead of the Victorian era general meaning.

Why Collect Spring Flowers Postcards?

Several Reasons To Collect Spring Flower Postcards

Catherine Klein Daisy Flower Postcard At the end of winter and beginning of spring, it's time to celebrate! Old, vintage postcards help us do this with their colorful array of beautiful spring flowers that just beckon us to emerge from our winter cocoons.

Spring flower postcards also remind us that winter won't last forever. Luckily, the beauty of spring flowers on old, vintage postcards do last a long time. No more snow, no more shoveling, no more frigid temps, yea!

OK, so now we have to endure heat, and humidity; lol. The beauty of spring flowers should help. After all, who can stay grumpy during a heat wave after looking at such colorful beauty on old, vintage postcards.

Collecting spring flowers is an alternative for people who cannot have a garden. Maybe they live in an apartment, or travel a lot. Old, vintage postcards are mobile, gardens are not. I tried growing Lilies in a large pot once as I was living in an apartment at the time. I had to buy new plants the next year. Many spring flowers come from bulbs that don't do well in container gardens. I found that out the hard way, bummer.

I am a participant in a postcard forum called PostcardCollector.org, where postcard collectors share what they know and love about collecting postcards. One topic, started by jtruskot, was about Catharina Klein (more commonly known as Catherine Klein). I thought it might be interesting for readers of my lens on spring flower postcards to find out about the postcard artist who created sooo many beautiful paintings of flowers. Here is the link: C. Klein - Artist Signed Postcards. FYI, it includes a lot of beautiful C. Klein flower postcard images.

Flower Color Meanings

German Birthday Vintage Postcard, DaffodilsFlower colors have meaning, same as types of spring flowers. For instance, the meaning of a rose or iris changes depending on it's color. If a rose is pink, it means grace and elegance. If an iris is yellow, it means passion. Interpreting color meanings may help interpret the story behind old, vintage postcards with images of spring flowers. teleflora does a wonderful job explaining flower color meanings.

I have found these postcard reference/price guides invaluable in researching, and pricing, the postcards I list. The Mashburn books are particularly helpful with extensive lists on artists signed, sets, topicals, etc. as well as reference guides on postcard eras and real photo dating. I'm actually on my third copy of one, having worn out the previous 2!

Vintage Postcards - Part of Green Movement

Igo GREEN Tip of the Day

What is the "green" movement?

"Environmentalists advocate the sustainable management of resources and stewardship of the environment through changes in public policy and individual behavior. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in (not enemy of) ecosystems, the movement is centered on ecology, health, and human rights."
** from an article entitled A Brief History of the Modern Green Movement in America found on the WebEcoist website,

Postcard collecting is itself "green" in that postcards aren't thrown away, but treasured by collectors. I have also changed my behavior and contributed to the stewardship of our environment by reusing sheets of paper with a blank side for order packing slips when shipping the postcards I sell. If you have any green tips related to the hobby of postcard collecting, let me and my lens' readers know via this lens' questbook.
