Meat Free Mondays

What Are Meat Free Mondays?

Put simply Meat Free Mondays involve giving up meat for one day every week. It is a brilliant way to have one day a week free of meat and it doesn't have to be a monday. Giving up meat for just one day a week will help you save money, experiment with other recipes and is a sure fire way of getting your five a day. You don't have to be or even want to be vegetarian or vegan to take part -everyone can join in. There is also some evidence to suggest that meat farming and production contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, in fact one UN scienist is of the opinion that meat production actually places a bigger strain on the planet than transport. Meat Free Mondays is supported numerous vegetarian celebrities and individuals and by the World Land Trust, an organisation fighting to save rain forests and endangered wildlife. This lens aims to draw attention to the Meat Free Mondays campaign and help you find tasty, simple and nutritious meat free meal ideas.

What Do Vegetarians Eat?

Chances are most vegetarians eat pretty much what you do. Do you ever eat vegetable soup, cheese on toast or a plain omlette? These are all suitable for vegetarians, yet we don't tend to think of them as 'vegetarian foods'. A vegetarian is just someone who does not eat any meat or fish. A vegan, also omits meat and fish but goes further in that they also omit any animal products such as dairy and honey from their diets.

What to Eat on Meat Free Mondays

Meat Subsitutes

One of the easiest ways to omit meat from a recipe is to use a vegetarian meat substitute instead. This is particularly useful if you're pushed for time as substitutes tend to cook much faster than meat. It also let's you stick with familiar meal ideas and recipes.

Is fish classified as meat? I can give up meat for one day a week as long as I can have poached salmon (and perhaps a coddled egg as a nightcap).
