1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 1/2 cups fresh bread crumbs (3 slices firm white bread)
1 large egg
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges
1 medium carrot, sliced
1 medium celery stalk, sliced
1 can (14 1/2 to 16 ounces) tomatoes
1/4 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
