For pilots of the free online sci-fantasy RPG

This guide will help mech pilots in the MechQuest science fiction/ fantasy roleplaying online browser game. Suggestions for purchasing equipment and general strategies are presented to help free account holders and Star Captains alike.

MechQuest is a free sci-fantasy RPG from Artix Entertainment, the creators of Adventure Quest, DragonFable, and AdventureQuest Worlds MMO.

1: Overveiw

This guide has three parts. The first part is for free account holders, nicknamed "Grunts." The second part will be for Star Captains, upgraded accounts. Star Captains have been nicknamed "Capt." in this guide.

The last part will be for the "Blue Blood" players. These are the players who have bought extra Nova Gems. Because Nova Gems unlock powerful items, these Star Captains have their own special considerations.

You can participate by leaving a comment below, giving your own ideas and suggestions. If your suggestion is good, it'll be forever immortalized in the Hints and Tips from You! Plexo at the bottom of this page.

1: Grunt

Free/ default account

As a grunt, or free account holder, you have to do everything the hard way. The challenges before you are daunting. You can overcome your challenges with careful planning and thrift.

Planning means that you will know exactly what weapon you will purchase next and thrift means that you will not waste hard-earned credits on weapons and gear that you do not absolutely need. As a grunt, you can't afford to waste even a few credits.

As of now, the best weapons for grunts are:
Front Arm: Energy Kama
Back Arm: Missile Roni
Front Shoulder: N00B Missile (x4)
Back Shoulder: Sling Missile (x1)

With the above list you need to become a black belt master, an elite pizza transport technician, and need to buy a mech with a front shoulder position.

Currently, the two basic mechs for grunts with front shoulder positions are the werewolf mech and the police mech. That means the grunt who wants either will be at least a rank 27 police officer (undercover police officer) or a police chief.

This is extremely daunting.

Below are the steps you can take towards level eight. I can't lie to you- it's a long, hard road.

1.1: Grunts' Guide

Steps for free account holders

You'll have to start by battling enough enemies to get money to start purchasing equipment.
  1. Freshman Laser Pointer should be your first purchase at 150 credits.
  2. Smokey Flame Thrower is a weapon you'll be using for a while. At 190 credits, it's a great deal. This weapon does damage over several turns. Taken altogether, the damage averages about 20 points per use. Be sure to use the flame thrower first in combat to maximize the damage per turn.

Right now you should still be level 1.
  3. N00B Missile (x4) is another weapon you'll be using for a long time. Save your money to purchase it next. Remember to sell the Freshman Laser Pointer. Weapons are starting to get expensive... this one will set you back 1,000 creds. But the average damage is 12.

You will be able to purchase the missile launcher before level 3.
  4. Leave the ship at level 3. There's no reason to stay unless you want to explore it some more or do the boss fight.
  5. The Double Autogun should be able to fit into your short-term needs. Although it does only an average of 7 damage, it's a lot better than the default weapon and has a 0 cool-down. Buy it as soon as you can and don't sell it when you get the Mamma Mia Mega Slicer. Because of it's zero cool-down, you'll still need the Double Autogun for long combat.
  6. Get a job delivering pizza and buy the Mama Mia Mega Slicer when you get enough money. At this point you should be close to or at level 4.
  7. Three things you should work on when you max out your pizza job: 1) Start working on getting your energy blade levels up by attending Energy Blade 101 at the academy; 2) Start working on the police missions; and 3) Work on getting money.
  8. Start saving for a better mech. You'll need a ton of cash for a real upgrade. I would suggest the police mech for 55,000 credits, but you'll need to be a level 27 police officer. That's why you're working on leveling up your energy blade skill- it will help you on your police missions.
  9. Watch for specials that come with seasonal or special events. Sometimes powerful-but-cheap items can be had. Also, new items are being added all of the time. Perhaps a better, cheaper mech besides the police mech will come out.
  10. A new mech will be a long time coming. So have fun with the different missions like those at the Academy or the Mysterious shop. Be careful about how you spend your hard-earned money. One unwise purchase can set you back a long time.

2: Star Captain

Star captain/ upgrade

The steps for Star Captain are essentailly the same as the Grunt's steps except you have access to better equipment that is also cheaper. And since you have better access to mechs you can mess around a bit more.

Follow the steps as outlined for the Grunts but once you are in Soluna City you can find better weapons at better prices. Don't be afraid to experiment with weapons because you can afford a bad buy from time to time.

3: Blue Blood

Star Captain + Nova Gems

Follow the instructions for Grunt with one thing in mind: once you hit level 5 you can buy the Kurosawa mech. Anything you buy will look terrible when compared to the Kurosawa default weaponry. At 400 Nova Gems, it's a great deal. Use the MQ Spreadsheets to plan your buys. I recommend saving for one of the weapons that stun.
