Marine Emergency Duties A3 (MED A3)
MED A3 is a one day Transport Canada course for operators and crew of Small Non-Pleasure vessels.
If you are a fishing guide, crew boat or water taxi operator, or operate a non-pleasure vessel for an employer, you need to have this certificate.

MED A3
The MED A3 is a Basic Safety Course for Operators and Crews of:
Small Non-Pleasure vessels of not more that 150 GT,
not more than 12 passengers,
without berthed accommodation,
operating not more that 25 nautical miles from shore, in any waters.
GT is Gross Tonnage which is a measure of the internal volume of the vessel and is not related to the weight of the vessel.

Course Content
What you will learn
This Transport Canada approved course has been designed to provide operators and crew members with:
1. a basic understanding of the hazards associated with the marine environment and the vessel they are operating,
2. the prevention of shipboard incidents including but not limited to capsizing, taking on water, overloading and running aground,
3. the knowledge necessary to raise and react to alarms, and to deal with emergencies,
4. an ability to provide assistance in fire and abandonment emergency situations,
5. the knowledge and skills which will enable all persons aboard to assist in their own survival and rescue,
6. the ability to recognize and operate signaling devices including pyrotechnics and electronic communication,
7. the knowledge for proper boat care and preventative maintenance measures to ensure the vessel is seaworthy in all marine conditions
At the end of the course, you will take a short exam consisting of 18 multiple choice and 6 True/False questions. Pass is 70% which nearly all students easily achieve.
