There are many things in the clothing universe that you just don't think about. Like for example: is there a difference between men's lab coats and women's lab coats? You've heard the phrase "We've come a long way." It was once used as a slogan for the women's movement in the 1970's. Lab Coats have a long history in the annals of comedy. Somebody, a long time ago, decided that a doctor in a lab coat could be just as funny as a clown in makeup or a straight-man wearing a suit.

This is especially true for animated shows. For decades animated shows have cast doctors in the role of comedic fodder, usually as slightly inept professionals who are always there with a funny line or a comical diagnosis. For a perfect example of this type of character you have to look no further then Julius Hibbert, the resident physician at Springfield Hospital on the hit animated show The Simpsons.

Modeled after Bill Cosby's character on the Cosby Show, creators even went as far as to give Dr. Hibbert a pension for colorful sweaters and children who resemble Cosby's on-screen progeny. Dr. Hibbert is a smart man, though he has a tendency to laugh even at the most tragic news. Most of his comedy comes from either comedic diagnosis, or clever one-liners, which vary form person to person. He is a doctor but also seems to be a pediatrician and a surgeon (he has performed surgery on Homer Simpson several time). He seems to be a good father, fairly ethical (though a tool for the HMO circuit) and has hairstyles that reflect famous black actors depending on which decade you see him (dreadlocks, a Mr. T flattop, etc.).

On Family Guy, the resident doctor is a much more inept doctor than Mr. Hibbert is. His running joke is that when giving diagnosis he always mentions whatever bad stuff is on his mind before getting to the actual information (for example: when telling Peter Griffin what his cancer test said he starts by noting "No, no, this isn't very good at all%u2026". After a brief pause he then holds up a picture that his son drew "This doesn't look like me at all"). He seems to kind of know what he's doing, though he has a tendency to be too stupid to be believable at most times (putting his hand in a used needle draw thinking it's where he keeps his rubber gloves).

Not often do you see a lobster- like alien wearing a lab coat, but that's exactly what you saw if you were a fan of Futurama which aired on FOX in 2000-2003. The running joke with Zoidberg, besides the fact that he was broke and%u2026ummm%u2026 had claws%u2026 was that he was a terrible doctor usually giving wrong diagnosis or, because it was the future, curing them in weird ways. Frankly, he was hilarious, and just the latest in a long line of funny doctors on animated TV shows.

We occasionally get a comment or email along the lines of "Wow that's expensive. Why?" I used to just shutter with anxiety when faced with this question. But that was an early issue . . . long gone. I wrote this email to a female customer a while back to answer that exact question . . . .

As someone who's worn scrubs and lab coats every day of work as a PA for the last 9 years (mainly ER), I was always looking for something of higher quality. Better fabric. Better fit. Better sewing. Better durability. Just an overall better appearance. And comfort - too. I never could say (previously) that my scrubs or lab coat were very comfortable. Abrasive and yucky would be a better description. And when you consider how much time we spend in the darn things - yikes. So all of those "goals" force the price up.

Specifically, "made in USA" triples our sewing costs - but that was what I chose to support the U.S. economy and to have a closer eye on quality control. Sewing curves rather than straight lines adds a ton of expense - it is much, much more difficult to sew a woven fabric that truly fits and flatters the female figure. Straight, boxy lines are cheap! One of our mottos is "scrubs are square and women are not." And we sew almost every single seam with a slight curve to it. We even have darting at the bust and great shaping in the rear/leg - giving an elongated appearance that's so flattering. The performance fabrics that we use are more than quadruple the "typical" scrub fabric costs - but I think it's worth it. The fabric lasts much, much longer. It doesn't pill. It doesn't fade. It washes well. And it does something!

Our scrubs are moisture wicking and odor resistant (Dri-release/FreshGuard) and our lab coats repel and release stains (Advanced Dual Action Teflon fabric protector). Makes so much sense for a white coat!! We hear from customers who are telling us that "blood literally just rolls off my lab coat." Wonderful! Just about anything constructed of fabric can be embroidered, including pillows, linens and towels, and articles of clothing, such as jackets; however, this article provides an overview of monogramming techniques and serves as a useful guide to those looking at embroidery options specifically for lab coats.

In the medical profession, a person's rank, education and title can be indicated on a name tag, or more commonly found embroidered onto their lab coats or scrubs. The name and title placement is a "mark of status and achievement" and communicates to patients the clinician's professional designation. When embroidering a lab coat, it is customary to include one or two lines of embroidery. The first line contains a person's full name and credentials. The second line is usually the type of specialty or practice name. The addition of an embroidered logo can be used to effectively brand a company or practice as well. Be sure to get the correct spelling of the person's name and title. While it may seem like alphabet soup, the correct use and placement of these letters and initials is very important in medical settings.

When choosing to add a logo or other custom embroidery, be sure to look for companies that use the latest in digital embroidery equipment and that provide stitched-out proofs (not just digital versions), before approving final embroidery work. This gives the buyer a chance to review not only the quality of the stitching and how the logo or embroidery will look when translated onto fabric, but the accuracy of the information to be embroidered. Also, be sure they use of high-quality, 100 percent polyester thread, which allows the embroidered work to retain its color, even when the garment is bleached.

A white lab coat is subjected to countless stains in both clinical and laboratory settings, so it's important that the thread used in embroidery is resistant to fading from exposure to bleach. In addition, the use of all polyester thread means that its colors won't bleed onto white coat during washing or cleaning. The practice of polyester threading for embroidery is what allows white athletic socks with colored logos to be bleached without the logo losing its color or bleeding onto the white socks.

Aside from the thread's material, an equally important factor is the density of the stitching. To avoid cheap-looking embroidery, one must ensure that only high density embroidery is used, otherwise the white background shows through the lettering or logo, creating an extremely unprofessional appearance. In general, the adage, "You get what you pay for" applies to embroidery work. Why bother spending extra on a high-end lab coat only to depreciate it with lower stitch rates, lower quality thread and yarns?

To avoid the above scenario, be sure that a company is using only the newest and most technically advanced embroidery machines. The only way to ensure that a company will follow through on its promises is to provide a high-resolution logo file. When using a font for custom embroidery, be sure to use a digitized font to ensure higher quality finish (if unsure, check with the company before choosing any non-standard font type). Always request a sew-out, which is an actual swatch of fabric with the logo or embroidered text that provides a "sewn-out proof" not just a picture depicting the embroidery work. Depending on the company, sew-outs and digitizing of logos usually range from $35 - $125, depending on complexity, color variation and stitch quantity. Be sure the company uses correct backing placed behind the fabric to absorb numerous stitches and to increase the durability and longevity of the embroidered work, so that it doesn't cause puckering around name and title.

At Medelita we cater to a rather vocal group of customers. They are not shy in telling us what colors we should have, and truthfully, what colors we are "crazy" for not carrying. We have to slow people down a bit - and first explain that we are a brand new company with made in USA products, and thus have been cautious with growth and expansion of our product offering. But black scrubs was not something we were nervous about. We had sold hundreds of sets of men's black scrubs at American Academy of Dermatology meeting in Miami, as well as multiple phone orders, prior to even having a sample! Shocking - still!

A big box store that takes over a local economy is supposedly good for America because it stocks things that are made in America (though, mostly made in China). What does that even mean? Are we supposed to support these companies and buy their products just because they are made in the USA? Well the label Made In The USA does have many advantages in this troubled economy. Unless you truly understand the business world, you might not be aware that products provide money for much more than just the company. Take women's lab coats for example. Purchasing a lab coat is not to be taken lightly. Doctors need something more than a simple white coat, they need something what will repel stains, keep fresh and, most importantly, stay comfortable during a ten hour work day. Answer: The short answer is that at this time, although we use 100% cotton (grade A) fiber in our lab coats fabric - they are not certified organic. I wish that they were - it would be a tremendous benefit to our customers and one that I would personally choose, as a customer and someone heavily involved in development and design.

Long answer - is that we are a new, small company that is simply trying to find a balance between successful introduction of a new-concept product and keeping costs at a level that will allows us to grow and to make it over this "hurdle" in the economy. I'm sure you know the statistics, as your blog was quite impressive. Less than 5% of garments sold in the U.S. are actually made in the U.S. We are proudly one of those companies. We both manufacture and retail our products - also a very unusual combination for a new uniform company (most are imported as finished goods and the brand label is applied to the garment). We utilize modern, technically advanced, 3rd party certified by the respective patent holder performance fabrics - something very new to the medical apparel industry. Most uniform companies that "boast" performance characteristics are using generic treatments with very little longevity or effectiveness. That is not the case with our fabrics. We pay more per yard of fabric, than almost every single lab coat or scrub company does in total cost of goods - total (!). So when researching and sourcing various options during the development phase - I very much wanted to introduce organics - but found it to be cost prohibitive at this time. It's rather challenging to introduce lab coats and scrubs, such as ours - at a completely different price point than what most clinicians are used to. We're talking anywhere from "free" to $40 for a lab coat, and the same for scrubs. Some immediately see value in the fit, quality, and performance fabrics (especially in person at medical conferences) and don't think twice about the price. Others have been "trained" that medical apparel is cheap and disposable, and are turned off by the "new" prices found in medelita and Medelita Men's garments.

In terms of organics in our future - it will be aligned with our growth trends. So please help us to spread the word about www.medelita.com and www.medelita-mens.com. Our initial introduction of organics will most likely be in the scrub fabric (closest to your body - which makes sense). While most people might believe that a lab coat is just a lab coat, anyone who wears one for at least part of their workday can tell you that there are four main characteristic which determine a superior men's lab coat from one's that merely make the passing grade. Fabric, fit, function and style all must be paramount in its design for it to be considered superior coat.

When it comes to what makes up your coat, 100% high denier cotton is the Rolls-Royce of lab coat fabric. These uncomfortable lab coats can also lead to fatigue of the neck as pockets filled with stethoscopes, prescription pads and other medical necessities continuously pull on the neck. A properly fitted men's or women's lab coat disperses the weight of the garment and its contents over the entire shoulder's and not just the back of the neck making the lab coat more comfortable.

Function is an important aspect of any work coat, but for a lab coat it is paramount. In a lab coat utility equals function. Superior lab coats should have four or more pockets, as well as feature a soil and stain treatment and should give the wearer a full range of motion without compromising coverage. Lab coat pockets should be large enough to hold all the necessities depending on the medical environment. Soil and stain protection is a must to repel organic fluids and release ground in strains like ring around the collar. And, most importantly, the lab coat should allow a full range of motion without compromising protection.

Like most people I have always been under the impression that there is no difference between one doctors lab coat and another. Lab coats are just lab coats, right? Just cloth with pockets for prescription pads, correct?

Ask any doctor and they will laugh at this. I actually know this because one of my friends who is a pediatrician did this when I asked her why she would spend $150 on a lab coat. How was I supposed to know? But I guess the old rule applies here: you get what you pay for. You can spend less on a lab coat, but if you spend all day in it, you wouldn't want to.

She put it to me this way: say you're a lawyer who has to spend most of his or her day driving from city to city for court appearances. You spend, say, four hours a day on the road driving your car. When it comes time to purchase a new car that you're going to spend all that time in, are you going to buy the cheap car with uncomfortable seats or a more expensive one that has designer seats which won't hurt your back day after day? Chances are if you have the money you're going to spend a little extra of it on the car that you'll be the most comfortable in.

And like a car, differently priced lab coats have different features and comfort levels. A basic lab coat will essentially give you a coat with one or two pockets, no stain protection and very little breathability. If you can live with it then go ahead, you just won't be very comfortable with it. Also, they probably aren't going to last that long so you'll have to buy a new one fairly soon.

According to my friend good lab coats all have a few things in common. First of all, the fabric needs to be breathable. 100% cotton lab coats seem to be the way to go since they not only breathe but also are more durable, comfortable, and look better longer. While most people might not think about it, the way a lab coat fits is also very important. A properly fitted coat disperses the weight of the garment and its contents (i.e. what's in the pockets) over the entire shoulders and not just the back of the neck. This obviously makes the lab coat more comfortable.

My friend also stated that a quality doctors lab coat should have at least four pockets, have soil and stain treatment and should give its wearer a full range of motion without compromising protection. Finally, lab coats have to have a certain style. Since it will be one of the first impressions you make to your patients, you want them to look good and give them off a certain professional feel. All of these make a good lab coat, and it's a lot more important than you might think.

Erin will be the first to tell you that it hasn't always been easy. But, then, Erin has never been one to shy away from hard work. One of the biggest challenges for Erin was finishing the PA program at Cornell University in New York. "PA school was very intense. This intensity made me dedicate my life to school and the basics. Even then, there were many things that I simply opted out of. Like sleep, for example!"

After successfully completing the PA program, Erin went on to pursue her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Today, she balances her time between treating ER patients in a medically undeserved rural community of Michigan, and teaching the next generation of Physician Assistants at Central Michigan University, where she helps shape the curriculum. Somewhere in between rounds and classes, she's also managed to create nine instructional videos on suturing techniques which she posted on YouTube and compiled onto a DVD for her students.
Who inspired you?

"My mother is a nurse practitioner and has been a great inspiration for me. She demonstrated that it is possible for a woman to balance a medical career with motherhood. I am very thankful for the example she set."

When asked which role she prefers, Erin says, "Honestly, I enjoy them both equally." Erin thrives on seeing her students gain knowledge and confidence. While challenging her students, she also enjoys challenging her own critical thinking skills in the ER. "It can be very gratifying when I know I have done something that will benefit a patient."

It's this curiosity and passion to help others than compelled Erin to become a Physician Assistant. While completing an internship as a dietitian, Erin had the opportunity to observe a PA assisting in a surgery. "Seeing how involved the PA was in the actual surgical procedure really made me curious about the role of PAs in healthcare."

As an emergency room PA, Erin has learned just how integral and valued Physician Assistants have become in the delivery of healthcare. Says Erin, "PA provider care is quite complimentary to ultimate physician responsibility. By potentially freeing physicians from many tasks, we can allow them to focus on their strengths."

That's Erin for you: using her talents not to forward her own professional aspirations, but to improve overall patient care.

You've been there before. Sitting in a doctor's examining room, holding together a wafer-thin way-too-revealing gown, paper crinkling under you as you shift uncomfortably and wait for what you assume will be a 10-minute exam (max) with a doctor juggling too many patients and too little time.

Shorter than traditional coats, the Elizabeth B. is 28 inches in length and falls just below the hip on a woman of average height. "We chose to name the coat in honor of Elizabeth Blackwell, the very first female medical school graduate who paved the way for women in field of medicine. At the turn of the 19th century, female doctors did not exist. But Elizabeth Blackwell changed that with her inspiring life's work. Education played an important role for Blackwell, whose father moved the family from England to the U.S. Motivated by the desire to fill the unmet needs of women who preferred to consult with a female physician, Blackwell eventually sought a formal education during a time when medical schools simply did not allow women. Her application to the Geneva Medical College in New York was inadvertently accepted because students and the administration thought it was a practical joke.

Eventually, Blackwell's persistence won her respect, admiration and the first U.S. medical degree awarded to a woman in 1849; however, she was barred from practicing in hospitals and set up a practice out of her own home. Among Blackwell's many achievements was the establishment of women's medical schools in the U.S. and in England. The educational institutions were the culmination of plans co-developed with Florence Nightengale, whom she met during the Civil War. Well into her later years, Blackwell continued to inspire and encourage women to study medicine. Today, women represent more than half of the students pursuing some form of medical education.

It was at her father's side that Margaret learned how compassionate care can make a tremendous difference in the lives of people who need it most. Along with her father's compassion and sense of humor, Margaret inherited a healthy dose of bravery from her mother, who served as a nurse in a London hospital during the Blitz of WWII.

It was the inspiration she found at home that lead her to helping people in need around the world - from Chiapas, Mexico to East Palo Alto, CA, where she currently treats underserved and homeless patients.

With a touch of humor, she recalls the life-changing moment she recognized her calling to become a Physician Assistant. "I turned 40, digging in a bed of collard greens in Chiapas, and realized that I needed more qualifications if I was going to help people in need," Margaret says. "Becoming a PA was the natural route."

Twenty years later, and Margaret certainly has the qualifications to care for the health of people who have fallen through the cracks. She earned her PA certification from the Stanford University Medical Center Primary Care Associate Program, where she had the unique privilege of meeting Dr. Patch Adams. "His integrity, humor, and take-no-prisoners attitude to the hobbling time constraints placed on medical practitioners was quite inspirational," Margaret recalls of the encounter.

She's certainly carried those lessons into her work as a PA and leader in her profession. For the past 17 years, she has been treating the homeless and poverty-stricken with equal parts respect, dignity, and compassion. As the lead clinician at Ravenswood Belle Haven Clinic in East Palo Alto, she has become the only source of regular medical care for people whose lives are in constant flux.
What has been the greatest reward for your work?

"Like so many other health care providers, I sometimes work long hours trying to get services to patients. But in the end, it's a good feeling to go home at the end of a long day knowing that someone feels better, even happier, as a result of what you have done."

"We all know that good food, sleep and exercise are the mainstays of good health," she explains. "These basics are almost impossible for poor people to obtain."

While confronting the challenges of helping her patients stay healthy, Margaret is more likely to cite the rewards. "The smiles and hugs from people who think you have helped them is very gratifying. I haven't regretted a single day (well, maybe one or two) in the last 20 years."

Quick to credit the sources of inspiration in her own life, Margaret has inspired a new generation of PAs to follow in her footsteps. In between her clinical duties and patients, she's managed to find time to volunteer as a teacher at the Stanford Primary Care Associate Program, where she was twice recognized as "Teacher of the Year."

Always modest, Margaret says of this recognition, "I was surprised to find out that I am reasonably good at teaching. I never would have predicted that. It's very gratifying to see the 'aha' look when something that has been confusing suddenly becomes clear."

One thing is certainly clear to us: this AAPA 2009 award-winner for Service to the Underserved deserves our thanks. Which is why we were thrilled to send Margaret a personalized set of Medelita scrubs, which have made quite an impression in her clinic.

Medelita- Medical Apparel is Designed to Better Complement Female Form

Medelita has introduced medical apparel for female clinicians that is designed to better fit and flatter the female form.

"Clinician scrubs and lab coats have not changed since the 1970s," explains physician assistant Lara Manchik, who developed the Medelita line. "Medelita originated out of a very real and urgent need among female clinicians, myself included, who were frustrated with the shapeless, unisex-style scrubs made from uncomfortable fabrics. The Medelita line of clinician scrubs and lab coats maintains many traditional scrub features while providing a professional, fitted silhouette. Clinician scrubs tops feature darting at the bust, tapering at the waist and hips, and tailoring at the sleeves, while clinician pants include a subtle, slimming bootleg, contoured rise from front to back, and flattering seam placement, the company says. Other features include side panel pockets and a hidden money pocket.
